Just wondering what the maximum practical barrel length would be for a 6mm Dasher.

Depends what your thinking of achieving Norm. I doubt you will get much more velocity than the 3070 fps or so bracket even in a 32 inch barrel without starting to wreck cases in a half a dozen firings. Anything longer than 32 inches is probably going to start costing you silly money. So many people have them work at 30 inches first up that you can probably argue with. Of note is the 1000ydBR shooters in the USA that have them really humming at 28 inches. One I spoke to said he starts at 30 and sees how the barrel performs. If it groups small he lops it back to his preferred 28 inches and goes from there. Whether its a balance thing or just a magical length I dont know. FWIW I start at 30.

They say after 28" you get an average gain of 8fps. per inch.

We just recently made a 6 Dasher ammunition pressure test barrel for a manufacturer. I'll ask them what they are getting out of it. It's a 30" finish.

They did say it was performing just excellent in regards to accuracy as well.

Will let you know what I find out!

Thanks for the feedback.
I was thinking of 32" but was wondering if that length effected balance too much or if it had a negative effect on barrel fouling and accuracy.
The way I see it I can dock it back to 28" after a few thousand rounds with a re-chamber and crown job and extend the life of the barrel. Hard to do that if I start at 28" maybe???

Some years ago I had a hummer Maddco barrel after it was rechambered in 6br.
It measured 25". Out to 700 yards this barrel was very competitive.
My wife used this and won ranges and daily aggs at various Queens.
Obviously once past 700 yards it became less competitive :)

Cheers

From what I found out they were running normal working everyday loads thru the test barrel. Kept pressure under 52,000cup (not psi). They said some guys are running hotter loads then what they did as a max. but all of the loads with 107 SMK's were running low to mid 2900fps. range.

Thanks Frank,
Mid 2900fps is plenty if the accuracy is there.
Now all I have to do is get hold of one of your fine barrels! :D

Plenty of fine Bartlein 6mm's in stock Norm and another shipment on the way. Let me know if I can help.

Kind Regards,

Craig.

Hey Norm! As Craig replied to the thread you can get the sticks from him!

The ammo maker running the test said accuracy has been outstanding! Even when they shot lighter weight bullets like 85gr. etc...they were astounded at the accuracy as well!

With brass in the works from Norma and testing being done by ammo makers now components should become more available for all the shooters!
