Just wondering if anyone is using a Savage F/TR? Good, bad or indifferent?

Cheers guys how does the 223 stack up against the 308 at longer ranges?

That rather depends on who's doing the driving.

From the ones at our range I wouldn't recommend them. Both were 308s - accuracy was about what you'd expect from any factory rifle (i.e. not good), and the Accu-trigger is prone to over-sear unless set quite heavy. As for the US Savage team, I'd suggest that what they are using is not the same as what you would walk out of the shop with. They probably use non-factory barrels and modified bedding. No doubt some of our members will have had very good experiences with them - that's the way it is with factory rifles - you can be lucky. We have a Savage 12F in 6BR as a club rifle and its surprisingly good if you like a heavy trigger.

I bought a LRPV in 6BR for shits and giggles to shoot foxes and the first one I got had a nice ring ground into the bore about 6mm from the muzzle and was "pitted" from the muzzle back for about 6 inches. I had it returned to NIOA and they replaced the rifle. The second one I got was also pitted, but not as badly. I had Ziersch Custom rifles replace the factory trigger with a rifle basix unit and had the gun bedded and I can't really complain. It holds x ring elevation at 400 yards (which is the farthest that I have shot it) with 105gr hybrids and puts 75gr v-max pills under 1/2" at 100 yards with no load development. It could probably do with the firing pin hole being bushed also. I wouldn't recommend anyone putting their hard earned into one if there are better options available. A few guys at our club have them and they can do quite well, both are 223s. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck!

I had a savage LRPV 223 1 in 7 twist factory barrel and it was , at 300m, as accurate as any rifle i have ever seen/used. Like 9 shots on a 10c piece when there was no wind. (80gr sierras) The stock was fiberglass with integral bedding block. The barrel was a bit short (26") and the load a bit light for real long range stuff but at 300m it was a cracker...
On the other hand, i have not seen a savage FTR 308 that can group better than the 5 ring, and i have seen about 12 of them. 2 reasons. One, the average savage 308 barrel is a bit rough, and the bedding is just bare wood, no compound or bedding block. Anyways, they dont work.... I had a savage palma as well.... when i put an aftermarket barrel on i started getting good results, but i would do the bedding as well if i still owned it....
My savages now have target barrels and are bedded on choate tactical stocks with bedding blocks set into the synthetic material and nothing moves when it shouldn't !
