Hi All,
Can some of the SAUM users share any info in regards to any issues with this cartridge?
Do they chew out throats quickly etc....

I have found it to burn out barrels quicker than other cals, my first barrel needed a rechamber after 700 rounds. As you know there is so many variables that effect barrel wear like temp, firing rate, powder ect. One of the biggest issues I had with my Saum was the extra torque and recoil was rounding my front bag severely to the point the after two shots the bubble level was all the way to the left. It didn't really happen with the 308 so it was a new issue for me. I fixed the issue by machining rails into the stock.

Ahh Tim, don't go the QLD way and use 2209, some swear by it though and get great results, each to their own. I reckon it (2209) burns the throats quicker. I use 2217 as it burns a bit colder. I did read here that someone was using 2213sc in a saum. So far with mine, I'm over 1000 rounds and it still hammers. yes the throat has burnt about .030" since new, (i checked it this week) so not bad really. I'm still on the same original 100 pieces of brass, the same batch as the ones I sold to you and haven't lost any or had any issues, I run under 3000fps due to restrictions at some ranges. Adam P uses 2217 as well.
a little work with the Magneto speed and you will find the sweet spot.

I was hoping to use the N165? Vitavuri powder as it is (was) supposed to run cold, not sure how that works but thought it would have been worth a go.
Looks like that option has gone
Just wonder if the shoulder angle contributes to throat wear?
I plan to build a standard SAUM after the 195s have been tested and proven.
Or maybe an improved version

yes Tim I have been told that N165 is very good also but the price is sky high. Although I do know someone who has a very large stash of it but wont sell any. My long necked saum project fell through after talking to Danny Biggs, too much variation (read elevation) due to the long neck he thought. It was great one week and crap the next. He put it down to neck alignment issues being extra long.
i have enough batched 2217 for the next 5 years so I'm not changing anytime soon. Go standard saum and have fun with it.

I have only fired maybe 350-400 shots through mine but recently discovered one thing different to my usual 284s.
I started using my latest 284 barrel at the same time as my latest SAUM and they have a similar shot count. I have one of those throat checky things for a 284 so I kept an eye on my 284 a few times and it has only moved .007". My SAUM had started to go off the boil so I expected it to have moved the throat as well but I wasn't expecting it to be .025" movement as I measured it. Of course a sample size of one does not mean much and I suspect my 284 has a hard barrel and the SAUM not so much.

The only other issue is my usual gun ejects 284 brass nicely out the side of the action while my SAUM cases (and WSMs) sort of wobble around the ejection port like a drunk fat chick trying to get out of bed.

So which powder do you use in both barrels?

There is an old saying about a pot and a kettle....

2213sc is easier on the barrel , i suspect, and i know its easier on the brass for the same velocity as 09. also burns clean in this cartridge. i found 2217 a bit smoky, got more velocity but it just pushed me out of a node. more recoil too of course. so 2213sc was the best match for my setup. i have had to move the projectiles out a few thou and i creep them out a little more every couple of months. its shooting better than ever after >1000 . the other day i put 3 foulers down at a 50m indoor range and i got a one hole group, 7mm high and 8mm wide.... also you have to have your bags packed tight with fill... some lead in the stock is good too ...
