Hi all

I am looking at getting some new Brass for my 280 ackley
Apart from the Nosler brass I have looked at a few options.

Fire from from 30-06 brass. Looks like the 280 Ack case will be about 40-60 th short
Fire form from 270 brass. unsure about this one
Fire form from 280 Remington brass. Not sure of Remington quality

If anyone has some ideas on what will work and how much shorter the cases would be that would be greatly appreciated

in the past rebel guns in brisbane has at times stocked RWS 280 brass, Norma also make excellent quality 280 brass.

I fire form 280 Norma brass for my PO Ackley I usually Purchase mine through magnum sports , cheaper than Nosler per 100 as well ! And case wall contricity seems better than the Nosler brass

I found some Norma 280 brass but was under the impression this is the same as the Nosler stuff
A bit worried out the loose primer pockets that seem to occur on the Nosler brass.
I have this in my first batch of Nosler on moderate loads

That's why I do not want Nosler again but as it looks like Norma is made the same this could be a issue

They say it's the same . But as I said the contricity on the case thickness isn't as consistent as Norma personally I haven't had a problem with loose primer pockets on the original 100 Nosler cases I purchased which have been reloaded 12-13 times ( wouldn't use them in a Comp though )still use them on practice days they show no signs of leakage on primer pockets when firing and the same with the Norma brass I run 60 grains of 2217 and 53.5 of 2209 in saying that I also run molyed 180 grain Berger hybrid projectiles and have no issues with case life . When fire forming new cases I load 50.10 of 2209 travelling around 2760 ( light load) and it's surprisingly accurate .
You will find cases settle after 3 firings and I full length resize every time . Hope this information is a help too you

60. grains of 2217 is a bit lower than I use
My node is at 61.1 but this is still a moderate load as I can get to 62.1 with no pressure signs
I have ordered 100 Norma and will first fire form then head out to the range and fire that case with 62 grains of 2217 and see how many times I can fire the same case before
things start to stretch

That will give me the confidence that loose primers will not eventuate after all the time I have spent on the case prep

If you can find RWS it's probably the toughest brass on earth.
Keith H has been using Norma with some very good results and good brass life.

I suggest that you use a light load of 2208 for fireforming. I have shot numerous 60's fireforming with 168 Bergers with the load I use. I use the same load for the first reload, this conditions the brass & helps the longevity. As Matt said I have had good results with Norma & also Nozler as well. But I do use moderate loads in my 280HI I am not a believer of pushing the envelope, velocity does not win matches.

I did exactly as you say with my first 100 shots
I found a light load I'd 59.1 of 2217 hoping this would harden the cases
Then a ladder test showed a great node at 61.1 of 2217 this worked really well for the next 200 rounds
Then the loose primer started to show up

Keen to see if the Norma cases give me the same
Still looking for rws brass but not that easy to find

Hope the existing cases hold together for the next 100

Update on the Norma Brass I just received
Went out to the range with 1 case and 8 loads of 62 grains of 2217
Fired that case 8 times with 180 grain hybrids and the primer pocket held up well.

Big thumbs up for the 280 norma brass.
Just need to fire form heaps now that's the only downside
