Hi All,
Does anyone know if there is a way of protecting the bolt of a barnard from rusting?
Ceracoat etc
I do oil my new barnard but there are a few rusty ones about.
Interested to hear what people do.

Gave mine an application of Eezox and now wipe down with Ballistol when cleaning the rest of the Rifle. Works OK here in Brisbane where the humidity has been pretty bad. No sign of any rust.

WD40 Silicone oil available from Bunnings is the best thing where rust prevention on metal surfaces is required. Spray it on and put the bolt into your bolt bag wet. It will never rust. God on blued surfaces too.

I have had success with Mclube Sailkote, it's a PTFE spray which also makes cycling the bolt very smooth. I usually spray it before a shoot and after cleaning. Takes less than a minute to dry.

After shooting the SA queens where dust was an issue one day and many commented about crunching actions closed,
I was wondering if there is a dry lube that protects from rust too?

Yes, as I said use above silicon lube!!! Dust does not stick to the surface after the lube dries & you can pee on the bolt & it will not rust!!! You won't see rust on any of my bolts, mind you I do not make it a habit of peeing on them! Jokes aside though, they have been subjected to salt air many times with no ill effects. =D>

Thanks Keith, off to bunnings I go.
I think Rod D got the process mixed up with his bolts
Or he's going for the traditional rust blueing???

Next question,
How often should the bolt be sprayed with the silicone and should the bolt be cleaned with a white spirit etc before application?

At the end of the day when cleaning your barrel, no preparation needed. As I said earlier, put into your bolt bag wet, it will be dry by the time you need to use it again.

Keith,
Do you use any other lube on the bolt for lugs and extraction?
Thanks for the info

Yes I use a thin graphite grease by Outers, it comes in a small tube which I keep in the bolt bag with the bolt.
