Importing an action???
Hi All,
Can an Aussie gunsmith/dealer bring an action in from a US dealer that's not a manufacturer?
....... or is it a job for an importer?
Cheers.

Re: Importing an action???
Hi Dennis,
My experience has been that if the manufacturer does not have a U.S export licence the item cannot be sent out of the States.

I had Delta Tactical bring in a Kelby Atlas Tactical action last year direct from Kelbly's. That was a one off job and I tried to get Delta to bring in a tactical chassis for me but they screwed that up and couldn't seem to get the order going, so it can be done, but is not necessarily straightforward.

Re: Importing an action???
I imported two X BAT actions about four and a half years ago, and got them in with myself as the Importer. I purchased them from Lester Bruno for USD$1400 ea , with the dollar at parity (1.00 = 1.00) and he sent them direct to Jason Wong at Hurricane Butterfly Research Corp who are an FFL that Bruno's put me on to. I air freighted them via USPS, rather than risk other methods . Needed my 709A in place as well as my PTA.
I bought two in to help offset the fixed Permit costs at the US end.
With the dollar at parity at the time, they owed me $2400 ea by the time I was standing outside Customs at Brisbane it's them in my hand.
The paperwork showed that I had purchased them from Hurricane Butterfly Research Corp, which is legitimate and fairly normal, as the do a lot of very large arms shipments for normal business and are a registered FFL entity who legitimately export.
All the action needed was a serial number, which it had....and that had to match the PTA with me as a private citizen being the legal importer.

What brand of action ??
If they're set up for export it makes it a lot easier and cheaper otherwise you'll need a 3rd party to get it out of the US and they normally want 10-15 % plus they jab you on the postage, paperwork etc.

Re: Importing an action???
Matt, Bruno's has a BAT 3LL dual port with integral rail and r/lug. I've been keen on this configuration for a while. Was previously thinking about ordering one knowing the wait would be huge (which doesn't really matter anyway).
Seeing you wield your magic so fluently at the QRA Queens with a smooth dual port sold me on it.
Just contemplating if its possible to get it from Bruno's rather than out of BAT Machine Co.
Tony, who's name and dealers lic. did you put on the PTA.

Re: Importing an action???
Unless things have changed, you will get one from Bruno's a hell of a lt quicker than from BAT. If Lester has one....it's for sale.
I put my name as the Importer. Everyone...including Weapons Lic and Customs said " you can't do that", but when challenged to show me in writing where the Law says I couldn't do it...in black and white.. they couldn't do it. So they had to hand them over.I was a licensed firearm owner with a PTA that had the full and correct details of the "actions" listed on it ( on the PTA)
They didn't like it, but they couldn't stop me.
I bought and paid for the actions before I applied for the PTA.
So my PTA applications included the legal and correct serial numbers, as did the B709A that was next.
I knew the Customs computerised paperwork system from being a Licensed Meat Exporter for years and did my own Customs clearance paperwork.
Their final "attempt" ...face to face over the final counter .... was telling me that they could demand that a Dealer had to collect the parcel, because with me not being a licensed Dealer or Armourer, I couldn't legally chamber a barrel and fit it to either action ......so I pointed out that I had the right to choose to never put a barrel into either action if I wanted to, and that I might just keep them to look at. So he gave up and handed them over to me.
His final comment was that I had better bloody well make sure I didn't sell either of them in the next twelve months because then they could charge me with being an unlicensed Dealer
They probably changed the law in the past four years to stop smart arses like me

The FFL I used put their "minimum" permit fee (ie what they charged me for just for using their annual export paperwork) up from $500 to $1000 in just twelve months, when I got them to quote on the next "package" that I imported. That was just the use of their Permit....all of their shipment fees and charges ...including more "minimums" which really bite you on a small private shipment.....are on top of the "permit fee" !

Re: Importing an action???
I imported a Bat SV personally approx 4 years ago?
Paid Brunos approx $1100 USD.
By the time I had it in my hands it owed me in excess of $3K AUD.
Hurricane butterfly fees and internal US freight was approx $700USD alone
Then GST , quarantine inspection ect, ect, ect.
Great action but last time for me.

Re: Importing an action???
Either way it will work out roughly the same I ordered 2 bats through a dealer here and they both landed around $3k. I believe Luke at procal has an export permit with bat for a fair few actions if you can wait?

Tony that is pretty much how I did mine. My first came direct through Bruno when they were working in conjunction with their own exporter. The second I ordered through BAT and had them send it to another exporter which didn't complete the paperwork correctly and I was lucky I had some customs officers that were aware I was trying to do the rite thing. Customs also recommended I use hurricane butterfly in the future as they have very few issues with items being exported by them. In both cases I was the importer and had to pay duty and show recites of that before collection . . . . . .so yes it can all be done but don't do it with any ideas it's going to be cheap or quick! Haha
