Hi All,
Just curious as to what people are currently doing in regard to choice of calibers?
I have a 6 dasher which I have used for short range (which is disappearing from some shoots) and 7mm variants for the longer ranges.
Recently I have gone back to using the 7mm only so there's no surprises when shooting.
Do you shoot 1 or more?

I think the 7mm only idea is being embraced by more and more.

I know of a shooter who's only going to run a 7SAUM from 300 to 1000 and another who's only shooting a .284 for the short and mid and 7SAUM for the longs. I'm also planning on going down this path. I'm going to mix in some F-std at club level and possibly some PM's to reduce costs a little.

I'm using a shehane currently for all he way. 168gr loads for short range which preserve brass and barrel life and more than capable of 60.10's and other harder to find 180's for longer range. However will be changing to a magnum next year for long range and rough conditions. I use a straight 6br for club shooting purely for economic reasons but it doesn't see any OPM's

I have been using one caliber for a while now (since 2010). originally a 284 Shehane, Now a 7mm SAUM.
Both are capable of very tight groups at short range and hold well at the longs.
Those chasing 60.10's in calm conditions may think differently to those chasing consistent results in all conditions.

Yes Tim I remember once or twice I used the same barrel for 2 targets in a row but its not something I make a habit of.

There are numerous advantages to having one calibre (one set of reloading gear, less projectile and powder varieties needed, and greater familiarity with your rifle, both on the range and in the reloading room). But having multiple barrels in that single calibre is good too, allows you to bring a good barrel out when needed.

I tried a second calibre (6 Dasher) in my 6.5-284 days, but found it was affecting my judgement of wind allowance at the longs. At Queens shoots I've seen numerous times shooters agonising over when to put the 6mm away and bring out the 7 . Maybe if you could have some rules e.g. don't use 6mm past 700 etc. and stick to them then it would work.

6mm, one gun , one wind , is enough , , Chop.

Maybe one day there will be enough shooters to have a 6mm only class?

.284 win is a good compromise to shoot straight through and 280 Ai or saum if people wanted things a little easier with wind reading!
..........then there is the 7/08 Ai and........ ok ok , I can hear everyone shouting at me from here ! I won't talk about it ! ....haha!

i gave the 280ai away years ago, because I cranked more out than in, it was too good for me and Harder to drive, Chop

I run a 260AI for short and mid and keep my 7WSSM for long range. If I am traveling especially if its a Queens it has been good to have the 6.5mm as a backup if my 7mm barrel goes off tune . I found the 6.5mm to be a good combo of accuracy and BC that you can still shoot all the way to 1000 without feeling too disadvantaged against a 7SAUM.

It keeps those pesky 284 shooters on their toes too

No one has mentioned the good old 300WSM
I had 2 loads sorted for mine, 190 gn VLD for ranges to 600 then the 210gn VLD for the longer rangers
Both projectiles had the same 300 zero and the 190 had a straighter flatter trajectory out to 600 if memory serves me right. Then the 210 drifted less out to the long targets
One rifle worked for me but I have been guilty of putting together 6mm's for short ranges and even a 22BR that would poke the eyes out of the X ring. Woops I almost forgot the 300 Win Mag. 210's worked extremely well.

aaahhhhh yes. . . . . . I seem to remember using a borrowed Barnard 300wsm at a DRA teams match to demolish the X ring at 300m. No flies on big guns at short range.
