Does any of our Gunsmiths know why The M17 type actions have a tang screw going forward of the action towards the trigger, I think about 6dg
There must be a reason why ? many others of this type action followed
I have my ideas why, I think ,
I have almost finished my latest project with a Winchester M17 and was going to correct it but have since shot it the way it is in a prototype stock and it shoots very very well with one of my prime barrels in 6mm
so are we pulling down the screws at the right angle ?

I think 30 TPI same as Winchester M70. No idea as to why the tang screw is angled, but all pattern 14 & 17 Enfields have this feature. I have successfully re tapped the takedown screw threads to 28 TPI, it can be hard going though. A bit of trivia, I won the 1983 National Queens Prize with a Winchester P14 with an M17 bolt fitted, Maddco barrel, Barrett walnut stock.

Well, why not an historically accurate revamp revisiting the M17s roots.

The M17 is simply an Americanized P13/P14 originally designed for the 0.276 Enfield cartridge which would be on a par with today's top non magnum 7 mms.

It would be competitive today with good brass. So would the Ross 280. Some of Ross's projectiles of 100 years ago would compete with VLDs, ELDs or whatever.

i have fired a 280 ross in a ross straight pull action rifle.
the cartridge is not far behind the 7mm mag, and fired a heavy for calibre long ogive bullet.
palma match shooting came to insist on using the rifle of the host nation, because the canadians shooting the 280 ross had such an advantage over the 303 and 30/06.
the ross straight pull rifle got a bad name as the action could be assembled in such a way that the lugs would not engage on closing, while being capable of firing.
a very dangerous condition.
the cartridge was also loaded for sporting use as the 280 halger magnum, and got a bad name due to the fact that bullet design of the time was not up to the velocities, having poor terminal performance.
the 276 enfield was an excellent design, and might well have been adopted if ww1 had not intervened.
i think it might have had a 165 gn bullet at about 2800.

speaking of straight pull rifles, i have also fired a steyr 8mm rimmed straight pull.
the action was very smooth for a few shots, but got progressively stiffer to work as the shot count went up.
not a good thing for military in dirty conditions.
straight pull actions feel unsafe until you get used to not turning the bolt down.
the swiss rifle would be interesting to compare.

i have an old big bore converted m 17 single shot action it has aperture sights and is rounded off to take rem 700 long scope mounts a trigger job and a old custom stock but has cracked ,but nothing i can not deal with if the action will do as a solid place to start making a rifle up in 284 win for f/class i like the idea of giving someones old rifle a new lease on life .it was someones pride and joy once and is a shame to sit in a gun box if it could be competitive again

just because a rifle is old school,doesn't mean it wont hold its own today.
