whats better ? .224 80.5GR VLD Target or 80GR Bergers

#1 Postby lee_enfield223 » Sat Aug 01, 2020 6:11 pm

I have been told that 80gr Nosler CC projectiles are very slightly smaller in diameter than Berger .224 projectiles ? has any body else heard this ?
1) also why go for 80.5 gr projectiles over 80gr one's ? I understand that different barrels and rifles may shoot better with one or the other.
2) what load are you people using for your 223rem F class loads ? keeping in mind that some loads may not be safe in all rifles and I am only after a rough idea,

Hi, my pet load for the 80g Berger VLD is 24.2g of 2206H in an 8T barrel. I have never tried the Nosler or 80.5 as the VLD was accurate.

I use the Berg 80.5s (have done for a while), I tried the VLDs quite a while ago - because of the slightly higher BC - and didn't have a great deal of success (though I know other shooters who swear by them). End result was that I stuck with the 80.5s for 300-800 and now use the new 85.5 (hybrid) at 900-100.
I run the 80.5s at around 2950fps and seat for a very light jam (4-6 thou), actual load to get similar velocity will vary from rifle to rifle <insert maximum load/pressure warning spiel here> so I'm not going to get into powder details here. PM me if you want info.
I run both a 7 and 7.7 twist barrels

2 -Only hearsay, but cross referenced to other calibres = Nosler is cheaper than Sierra but pretty much the same design, 80 Berger is a Vld which some find finicky to set and keep in tune, 80.5 Berger full bore is a tangent so easy as Sierra to tune while only giving up 10 points to the vld, if only they weren’t quite so proud of them I’d shoot nothing else, :(

Thanks for your response guy's i tried out 80 and 80.5gr berger's at
50m which it to short for a good test and found that my rifle showed
Promise with two loads they were 24grs of 2206h behind the 80.5gr
Berger and 25gr of 2208 behind the 80.5gr berger's i shot 40 shots in
Total and almost all group's were single raggard holes except for the
24grs of 2208 behind the 80gr Berger which was about 1/2 an inch.i will try and
Post pictures of the target when i find an on line page to post the pictures on
