Wow, glad you had your back to him. The mausers are normally a very good action. I'm not sure how he got the bolt shut, because the extractor should be on the right hand side of the bolt and what's left of it is poking out of the left side.
On a brighter side, be thankful that it didn't happen to be the Tikka beside it. It probably would have hand granaded if he put the wrong ammo in it.

The extractor was on the R/H side, that's why it hit me. That piece of metal sticking up on the left is the extractor retaining clip I'm pretty sure that is normally curled around the bolt????

It was definitely a tongue in cheek reference to my other tongue in cheek thread "F-class..... the sport".

But me being there load testing was in the name of F-class...........

The receiver was chrome plated. You can see the chrome peeling off at the top. There was a chrome flake on my bench afterwards.
Does chrome plating weaken metal Keith?

Chroming can cause hydrogen entrapment which can make the unit that is chromed brittle. Not a good thing for rifle receivers.

98 mausers are supposed to vent excess gas through the magazine aren't they? This one has stayed together under extreme pressure going by the receiver and it has all come out the extractor groove bringing the extractor claw with it? I can't believe how much chrome has come off, the receiver ring must have flexed so much?
Could the magazine have been sealed off gas tight by conversion to a single shot?

Anyone that uses self drilling screws and solder to secure a rear scope mount could hardly be called a competent gunsmith?

Other people often scare me on the mound, especially those Match rifle dudes.

Unfortunate turn of events.

What safety glasses should we be wearing? I have trouble seeing through my scope with my current reading glasses so shoot without any protection.
Are these sorts of blow ups common enough to warrant glasses?

I shoot a Remington 700 and have never even considered what would happen with a dud round...just never seeing it happen has made me complacent.
