Which powder for 243 AI

#1 Postby Piper235B » Fri Aug 16, 2019 9:35 pm

G'day,
First post!
I'm having a rifle re-barrelled into 243 AI with 1:8" 28" heavy varmint barrel. This will be a plinker, varminter gun out to 500m
I'm planning to shoot 105's initially.
But I'm after thoughts from the brains trust here on which powder to choose for potentially the best accuracy/speed. I'd like to take advantage of the little bit of extra case capacity and barrel length.
I think my options are (1) ADI: 2213SC; 2217; 2225 or (2) Win: 760; 780 - although I've heard rumours Winchester powder is going out of Australia - rumours only!
ADI powders are generally easy for me to buy so I'd prefer to stay with them; but I do use Win powders and will continue to do so whilst they are available.

Thanks

Cheers
Piper

I don’t have any experience with 243 ai . But I’ve had a little bit of experience with the Venerable 7/08 ai . My thoughts too would be 2209 and cci 200’s or br2’s . 2213 sc may even work with the smaller diameter cal . 2213 sc is too slow for the 7/08 ai . Be careful and work up loads carefully.

You can even fireform with pistol powder and cream of wheat .
I did a thread once I think under cream of wheat fire forming , on this site . Again be careful with that too as you can blow yourself up if not careful. Everything in moderation.

I don't know about the 243AI, but I would assume 2209 or 2213SC would be a good starting point. Having said that, a mate of mine runs a 260AI and is getting good results with 2217. ADI lists all of the above powders with a 105-107gr pill in the standard 243 so I'd be starting with near max loads in the standard cartridge and working up until I hit pressure.

I was told to try reloader 26 in my 260ai. It gave 80fps more than the point where 2209 completely flattened the primer and left an ejector mark without any visible pressure signs. If its available, try it
