Bored ! 300 rum 230 gr loads please ?

#1 Postby GSells » Wed Apr 15, 2020 9:28 pm

Well I'm bored and have rare time on my hands to develop loads I wouldn't normally bother with .

So I have a 300 rum Pseco built rifle 1 in 10 Lilja and plenty of 2218 and fed mag primers ! Thinking of buying a pack of 230's bergers and send it !
Does anyone have a load that I can use and work up to as a yardstick ?
Is it worth running 230' s as opposed to 208 eld's?
Thanks and regards Graham .

Frank Galli strongly advocates for the 230 in a 300 Norma as an antidote to 338s, should be awesome I’d imagine

Greetings Sellsy. I played with a 300RUM I built about 12-13 years back. It was a heavy well built rifle with top components. I shot heavy SMK’s in it. It was never going to win a BR match. It ran bloody high ES numbers so I emailed Kieth H ( who then was perhaps chambering more barrels in a week than I’ve done in total ) and the gist of his advice was that them big long cases will not run ES numbers like say a 6BR.

Anyways I persevered with it for a while but just couldn’t get it to shoot like those guys ya see on youtube with pornstar good looks and their cap on backwards who often shoot incredible groups way out across 4 bean fields.

Guarantee the following is telling u how to suck eggs : a big gun like that will need to be well built and ergonomically right, heavy etc etc otherwise you will be chasing your tail trying to find out what it actually likes. I believe the component manufacturers are most happy to see folk playing with them big boomers. Lots of “gun upset” when u pull the trigger.

230 grain boolit all day long. As Ben suggested them 215's have a very good reputation. ELD's nah.

Hope it’s got a brake on it !

High Kieth , ummm dunno because it’s cool !! Lol! Maybe Ben is right 215’s .Rob yes it does have a brake but I would take it off to shoot it at a prize meet just for fun . I would be sailing close or exceeding Belmont energy limits . The majority of Qld ranges outside Belmont are 4100 ft lbs .

Ben what was your load of you don’t mind just as a yard stick please?

Sorry Graham, only shoot the 215’s in the little WSM case. But with a 10twist barrel.

I have a pack of 230’s to try one day, but they require significantly more freebore than the 215.

In the case of the WSM the extra BC of the 230’s doesn’t really make up for their lower velocity in terms of wind drift out to 1200yards. Might be a different story in the RUM.

The WSM case will push very close to 4100ft/lbs. I run the 215’s at around 2930fps which is right on 4100ft/lbs muzzle energy.

Graham
I have a 300 Norma and began with 230 Hybrids
I have not had nearly enough time with it as rare to get to stretch its legs
Shot it a couple of times at 1650 M and it is so darn good it is boring?

I found Reloader 33 to be the best velocity / pressure powder solution

Last time out I tried a few 230 ATips and they completely lived up to the high BC claim Hornady makes plus also accurate
2 1/2 MOA flatter than the Bergers at similar velocity

Thanks Shane , I don’t know if we are allowed to by projectiles from gun shops in Qld ? I’m thinking you should be able to as you don’t need a license for things that are inert . But may have to try 230 eld’s sometime !
I have found some 215’s so I’ll tune them up and bring this puppy out at the longs of a local prize meet !! Milliradians and all !
Thanks all for you help !

You need a Firearms Licence to purchase projectiles in Qld
Currently if RE1 licence you also need a property / farm owner letter allowing use over their property

Hi Shane ,

I have a friend just getting a 300 Norma mag going , he’s going to give ADI 2225 and 2218 a try , did you have any experience with theses powders ? Also has the A-tips & 225 ELDMs to test as well

Any advise welcome

Cheers

Tried 2225 but pressure peaked at lower velocity than Reloader 33
I have a 31” 1/10 Krieger at 3080 fps - no moly
