GRAHAM MINCHAM’S OPTIMUM BALLISTIC TECHNIQUES 3rd EDITION

Re: What are you doing to stay sane? RECOMMENDED READING DURING CORVID-19 BREAK
Sun Mar 29, 2020 I wrote regarding Graham's latest addition and suggested he write a brief introduction on the contents, included below.
Graham's work is unique, world class and highly recommended for the serious shooter in any of these disciplines
pgcpty (Peter)

[i][i]Primary Purpose: This book has recipes for the nodal tuning of rifles in the following disciplines:
• Target Rifle.
• Match Rifle.
• F-Standard.
• FTR.
• F-Open.
• Hunter Class

These recipes consist of a series of tables and graphs for a selection of cartridge and projectile combinations in each discipline and showing:
• The length barrel to use.
• The best twist rate barrel to employ with each projectile.
• What propellant powders to use.
• Re-chambering strategies.
• Estimates of muzzle velocity and peak chamber pressure at nodal tune.
• Estimates of barrel life.

Commentary is also provided on how to assess the merits of each recipe. Half of the book is devoted separately to these recipes and so there is a lot of data presented here. Most shooters will only be interested in one or two disciplines and so their task is easier.
The shooter is provided with multiple choices that enable them to make informed choices and being able to do this before the barrel is ordered.

New Theory: These recipes have been developed using existing and new theory and the reader will need to study the theoretical part of the book in order to follow the presentation of data in the recipes.
In particular the following theoretical aspects are unique to this book:
• Ballistic theory covering projectile movement from primer ignition to impact on the target.
• Analysis of projectile dispersion as it travels down-range.
• The effect of wind on dispersion at long range and how to control that.
• Analysis of using different twist rate barrels on projectile dispersion as it travels down-range.
• Analysis of muzzle velocity on projectile dispersion as it travels down-range.
• Analysis of muzzle velocity variation on projectile dispersion as it travels down-range.
• A summary of what parameters are best for short, medium and long range shooting.
• Nodal tuning theory, including new techniques developed by the author.
• Propellant powder-burn and how to choose the best option.
• Barrel and Case life and how to maximise these.
• Nodal tuning techniques, that is, how to reliably nodal tune the rifle.
• Scores at long range for recipes in all disciplines and at various shooter wind reading skill.

Thank you Peter for bringing Graham's work to the attention of Aussie shooters again. We have tremendous talent in this country, we don't need to look os when the likes of Graham pass on the pearls developed through his own initiative and competence.

I should thank Peter Carroll and all the recent responding members for showing confidence in this work and supporting Australian expertise. This is not a business for me but a non-profit exercise with the motive of passing on our local knowledge to local shooters. I hope that it provides a bit of relief from the boredom that we are all currently suffering. It is also my hope that it will provide a stimulus for further debate on the sport that we all love and enjoy.

Well for what it's worth, I got home having been playing in the office, and with uncalibrated data its OBT was 0.7gn but only a few FPS off the speed for a load that showed significant promise (before Covid19) for my new Ftr barrel chambered for the 200gn Hybrids. It will be interesting to see what happens when I chuck the Labradar data in and finesse the case dimensions. [-o< for some range time soon!

It also thinks that even the most mild Ftr loads are going to kill you #-o

Think you might have your threads muddled.
