Federal 210 GM primers
I've been noticing the odd unexplained vertical flier since I changed to Federal 210 Gold Match primers. It could be me but I'm reasonably sure its not.
I decided to have a close look at the primers. They appear to have a yellow substance in the base of the cup, coated by a red substance. This coating is not even as shown in the photo. Sometimes there is an excess, sometimes a deficit and in some it looks just right.
I done know the function of the red stuff but the variability looks suspect to me.
Can anyone enlighten me?

Re: Federal 210 GM primers
Apparently the red is a coating over the yellow primer compound. I have noticed the same in recent years. There is some talk on the interwebby about this, and federal state it makes no difference. I use 2 210M exclusively in my 308 and not noticing any fliers (at the moment).
Try batching the full red and others, and see if that makes a difference to your vertical.
Cheers

Re: Federal 210 GM primers
I don’t believe them (Federal).
If it doesn’t make way difference, what’s it there for in the first place? Manufacturers don’t do stuff that’s not necessary as it eats into profits. I was thinking some sort of sealer to keep moisture away.

Federal use Red wax compound on there 210 primers and purple on there 215Magnum . Its the only physical way to tell the difference and is done for safety purposes..

Just read back again, appears as you say, a wax/dye for ID. This is why they say no difference.
I've used 210M for years, my fliers can normally be put down the the nut just behind the bolt.

Re: Federal 210 GM primers
I found this a year or so ago and mentioned it here. As there was only the odd yellow one I did not use them. Put them in a separate tray, and one day I will load them to use up. As they will all be the same, should not cause any variation shot to shot if the different colors do have an effect.
Cheers,
Trevor.

Re: Federal 210 GM primers
So if the amount of wax varies, this could have a significant effect on results of weighing primers.
BTW I've been using CCI BR-2s for a long time, and have never had a misfire due to primer failure. However there was a growing number of complaints about misfires with them, so I finally gave in and a couple of months ago changed to one that everyone reckoned was the most reliable, GM 210s .

Alan,
I use federal 210M and have never had a misfire nor any verticle as a result of it...I originally purchased many of the same batch ...

I used BR2’s for ages with my 284’s but must admit when I changed to 210M’s and re tuned powder to suit they legit hammered. Shot a group in 1kBR that would have been under 100mm wide and maybe 20-25mm high if I hadn’t been too quick to let the first one go when the mirage was starting to run. First was out to the right, next 4 were in a fantastic group. 2810-2820 was the node that worked.

Re: Federal 210 GM primers
Tested several batches of different brands and Federal came out on top with 2209. Still using the bulk lot of Federals. Some vertical is powder fouling from unburnt powder. Its a good idea to try a hotter primer if these issues start presenting in cool weather or go to a faster powder if the musket seems to lose its edge. Testing the suitability of primers for a new batch of powder is a good idea and that the velocity of your tune is maintained in relation to an old batch.

I thought we had exposed the futility of weighing primers. Are people still doing it?

Yep, for big occasions. Leave nothing to chance because the competition is so hot. That also assumes the pin fall and spring pressure and pin protrusion are up to scratch.

Re: Federal 210 GM primers
You could use a mag speed or lab radar and see if there is a large speed difference on the flier. But so many variables .
Regards Graham.
Ps I use both 210’s and br 2’s and 200’s depending on the load .

Hi David , hope the cattle have some good feed !
Yeah I think they are both good primers with 2209 and it maybe it depends more on the barrel and the action ?
Below and I’m one of the OCD types that weighs primers . But below photo was with a bart .284 pseco smithed 2209 and 200’ s cci ( hunting grade ) . Charges were taken off the charge master. 5 shot sample put it was consistent from 2820 to 2920 all below SD of 5 over 30 plus shots . So I’m just lucky with this one I guess . Yet to be proven in comp but just showing cci and 2209 can work maybe because it’s a Stolle and not a barnyard ? Sorry that sounds very arrogant! Just meaning cci May work better in a Stolle in my stock etc ?
