6mm br benchmark 2

#1 Postby steveneckart » Mon Nov 30, 2020 8:34 am

Hi. Does Anyone on here load 6mm br with benchmark 2. Im currently working on some load development with 107gr sierra hpbt, cci magnum primers, 30" barrel. 1:8 twist . Adi suggests a starting load at 26gr, Max load at 28gr. I had low es at 26.6gr but only 2690ft/sec. Heavy bolt lift at 27.6 and didn't go any further. I have 2208 but want to see how bm2 performs first. What results/charge rates do others get loading 6mm br with bm2 and what ft/sec should i be expecting from 107gr sierra's. Thanks

With heavy bullets I always found BM2 to fast, try 2208 or RE15. Start around 28.5 grns and work up.

What velocity do you get with the 2208 mate?

same in 223.
it is very good in 223 with 50 gn bullets.
i believe it has a burning rate approx = imr3031, which is quite a bit faster than 2208/re15.

i use Bms in my 6mm ppc but barrel is 1 in 14 twist spitting out 70 gr pills very accurate BM2 IS better in slow twist barrels with smaller projectiles , have a 6mm Grendel 105gr bergers 06H 27.5gr. and 6 dasher 108gr bergers use 08 32.4gr all projectiles 10though in lance.

I have recently used some BM2 in my 6BR as I had about a kilo and a half laying around but I am running 103gr Copper Heads and I found that one grain less than what I use with 2208 seemed to give nearly identical performance. The load was 28.3gr BM2, CCI 450's, 103gr Copper Heads BnH coated and .008 Jam.
The same load with 2208 is 29.3gr.
I have set 3 range records and have a 119.14 {group was 1-3/4"/45mm} at 300mt and a 119.7 at 600yd... The 107 Sierra is a great bullet and I have had very good results with it but using 2208 and RL-15.
The 103gr projectiles just seem to be the ideal weight for the 6BR and that is why I have settled on them.
In the USA it is Bart's 103 Vapor Trails that seem to be the "Bee's Knees".
Anyway, sneak up on you loads and once you find one that is grouping well out of 5-6 different weights then start playing with OAL and somewhere between 7-8 thou jam and 25-30 jump you will find that sweet spot for your rifle. About every 300 rnds check your OAL, the throat will have some erosion and you will need to adjust seating depth to chase the lands...
Good shooting and may all your shots be in the X ring.... :D
PS: Don't worry too much about how fast your loads are going as it really doesn't matter if you are putting them where they need to be.... 2840-2860 fps seems to be the right node for the 6BR \:D/

Cheers for the info mate. I have started loading from 26gr of 2208 and plan to work up to 30gr from there. I found jam with .001 neck tension. Using norma brass neck turned to .011 . Minus the 20thou.
OAL is 2.350 give or take. I cannot remember the cbto. The rifle seems to have a tight bore and shallow throat. There is no way i could load to norma's 2.450 OAL. I assume this is why it hit pressure at 27.4gr of Bm2.
The new cases are around 37.4 h20 volume/case capacity and once fired are at 38.1.
Do you think 26gr of 2208 is too low to start with? Savage with 30" barrel.
Thanks Steve

My current load for my 6br using lapua brass is 30.7gr of 2208 with CCI BR4 primers pushing berger 105 tgt vld's which gives me 2963fps with an SD of 3fps seated 15 thou off the lands.
During the initial run in of the barrel i used 29gr jammed 5 thou into lands which was pretty accurate too but speeds were to inconsistent with SD's around 30-45fps
