Now just setting up for Bergers.
I contacted Sierra about these bullets and their reply; the sierra bullet has a tolerance of .0002" ie, 0.2838"-0.284"
So I guess if your barrel shoots them all well and good.
I have 800 if anyone wants to buy them who has a barrel that shoots them. I could order a barrel to suit but...

Geoff,

Did you chronograph any of your testing? Would be interesting to know what velocity spread was like. If it was good, then it may indicate a problem with bullet stability rather than diameter. The 183 looks a bit similar to Berger's 175XLD, very long nose and short bearing surface, and no-one seemed to be able to get that to shoot so it was discontinued.

Hi Alan, I found a uniform speed at 2850fps and grouping wasn't too bad at 140yds with this load in a 284W
I've just received more info back from Sierra, they recommend further exploring bigger jumps. Also, I may slow them down a bit to check a slower node.
I did hear yesterday that someone in SA with a SAUM had them running extremely well and then again another who had the same barrel brand couldn't.
Also, reading back through some of the posts, it seems to me that others are measuring the diameters of the 183's and getting a lot of variation. I did too. I used a couple of different vernier gauges and a micrometer all gave slightly different readings. if you haven't got a calibrated instrument, it's difficult to positively measure to the tolerance Sierra nominate. Mine I think are around .284" but I can say they measure .0005" smaller than my Bergers at the same point which is the junction to the boattail.

Yes, I only have a dial gauge caliper, and my measurements "trend" the same. Unfortunately, the 195s also look on the small side. The 180 hybrids are the fattest, followed by 180 VLDs (which is in line with Rod's info in the initial post).

This thread is a little old but I'm a little suprised it didn't take off a little more. I purchased some 183s and miked them at 0.2838". On that I ordered a tight bart (0.2832") in 8.25 twist and although it's still early days, it's produced some promising results. Saum, 55.5 of 2209 producing 2920fps.
Are others starting to use these or have any luck with them?

Josh,

I've tried them at about 2830fps in my Shehane and they are promising. I hope to do some more testing prior to Tassie and may use them at the longs there.

Josh, Alan
I have tested them in a SAUM in both 8.8 Brux and 8.5 Bart and feel that the advertised 8 twist is required the stabilize them completely. I was running at around 2940 and 300M found that the bullets holes in the paper weren't completely "centred" suggesting that bullets aren't completely "stable/gone to sleep". The groups where OK but not as tight as the 180's, the ES and SD looked really good, 10ES and around 5SD for 10 shots but the groups where hollow.

Matt,
Craig was kind enough to get Franks opinion on required twist which I believe was 8.25. The barrel only has 50 shots on it but everything so far suggests that 8.25 works very well. Has only been shot at 500y so I will be keen to see how it goes at the 1k mark.

I ran them at about 2830fps at 1000yd with an 8.5 twist Bartlein. There was some vertical for the first 10 shot shoot, but for the second round it very nearly held the X-ring. The first round vertical was in my opinion in the conditions, but could have been the clean barrel. I saw enough that I believe they were stable.

Bob Kinnear has been using the 183 sierra in a 8.5 Bart which i have wind coached and accuracy has been EXCELLENT !!

He also bought down his other SAUM a few weeks back which has a 9 twist Bart and out of shear curiosity he ran the sierra ammo through it. I was sceptical if it would stabilise but a 90.11 @ 800m was the result. They are definately accurate in my opinion..

I know i said they wouldn't run for me but, they do, they shoot very well, so well I've ordered some more. It just took a little thinking outside the box.

Thought I would give this thread a new kick start. I re-barrelled my 7mm SAUM with a tight 8.5" twist 30" barrel. I also shortened up the free bore. I then Boron coated the 183gr SMK's and proceeded to test. At the end of the day they shoot very well at .005" and .010" jump ( I did also test with a rifle cut barrel at 9" twist but could not get tight groups)
I found that the lower node of around just under the 2900 FPS was very consistent, although there is a higher node around the 2940 fps and with the extra .7 of a grain of powder but did show vertical.

The other factor is my barrel has only shot some 225 rounds, the rifle does weigh some 28lbs and is shot free recoil and has a long SS tuner plate under the full length of the forearm of the stock that can be tightened to chance the tension on the stock. I also shoot a 7mm/300 Imp WSM with same plate and it shoots the same tight groups with 180 gr Berger Hybrids. The 7mm SAUM did also shoot the same tight groups with the 180gr Berger Hybrids as well but on average the SMK's seemed tighter although about 15 FPS slower the 180 gr Berger Hybrids for the same powder charge.

PS. This was shot at Belmont todays date.

What about the regular 180gr sierra matchkings , are many people using them in saums and 284s ?

Try 2213, and they shoot jumped around .008" and the jump band is very narrow, maybe .010" max down to .005" jump but vertical will set in. I re-tested last week my winter load and 3 shoot groups at 100 yards were under .150" ES of 2 x 3 shoot groups was 5.

I lifted the up the powder charge for winter, I also Boron coat my bullets so run around 0.5 of grain more powder. I fined my node is around 2885 to 2900 FPS. I run a 8.5 twist.
