Hornady eld 7mm 162 projectile

#1 Postby copper » Mon Sep 25, 2017 9:27 pm

Hi guys
I have a 7mm 284 1 to 9 t 31" and I'm trying to make it shoot.I tried 180 vld,168vld, OKish. Now I'd like to try some of Hornady ELD 7mm 162 projectiles.I need some help here.I was told that this particular projectile needs lots of less power! So ,if any of you guys have tried that particular setting, how about if you give some starting point.
I'd appreciate your feed back.

Cooper,

I am running 51.5gn of 2209 behind the 162 ELD-Match (Mollied) in a 284 shehane for 2860fps. They have a 10thou Jam also and it shoots extremely well. This was in a 30in 1-9" Maddco.

For starters I wouldn't recommend jumping from one projectile to another hoping to find a match winner. Stick with the Berger 180VLD, you need to develop the gun and load, using someone else's developed load data may or may not work in your set up. 284's are quite easy to tune so if you told us what loads etc you are using most on this forum will give advice for their own gun. As posted above by Singo85, that load is way above my load data but it's for a Shehane chamber. So more info is needed.

Copper, those 162 ELD’s shoot very well and in fact I have been using them successfully in a re-chambered SAUM. They are a lot easier on the hip pocket too. The secret with them is to batch them by weight on very accurate scales and by base to ogive measurement.

Seating the projectile takes two stages. Firstly seat all rounds a couple of thou over desired depth, then batch the rounds from case base to bullet ogive. Secondly, seat each batch to the desired seating depth whether that’s a .010” jam or free flight.

Singo rightly points to 2209 powder and that is what I use in the SAUM with this projectile and found others who were engaged in testing 284’s, 2209 was excellent. Like Singo, I started testing with the .010” jam. He has given you a good starting load, but as Rebel has pointed out each person’s load data may not be suited to you.

The safest thing to do, is work up to Singo’s load in single shot, .1 grain increments, and above it, and establish pressure tolerance.

What I do without wearing the barrel out is a test at 25 yards, which I posted a while ago, is draw a horizontal line across the target. Warm up the barrel with four shots at say 50.5 grains in this situation, and set your sights at the left hand end of the line.

Next, fire single rounds in .1 grain increments, NOT groups of three at the same increment. You have to AIM OFF a bullet width as you fire along the line to the right with each shot or you could prepare aim crosses at ½ minute intervals along the line. Don’t wind the scope! I like to fire about 16 incremental loads along the line, checking for pressure signs as I go. The bonus of this test is it does reveal rudimentary barrel lift and you will see a sine wave develop. It establishes a good starting load for further load development, but you might be surprised how well that load goes.

You may use a chronograph, but unless its a Lab Radar, I would not bother at this stage. I only use chronographs for further intensive statistical examination of velocity spreads should that be required of components and settings these days. What the paper shows is the most important.

Geoff above mentioned developing "the gun and load". Id say that's fundamentally good advice because if whilst doing this you are chopping and changing bullet types then I'd say you would very likely get totally lost.

Perhaps you are already an accomplished shooter Cooper and can therefore be comfortably trusting there are no problems in your rifle setup and gun handling ?

I really appreciate all your comments.I had a go with a chrono today, and here the results:168 vld.av.velocity 2970 with 53.2 2209.Sierra 175 av.velocity2880 with 51.5 of 2209.Hornady,162 molly,av. velocity 2900 with 50 of 2209.2925 av.velocity with 50.5 of 2209.2945 av. velocity with 51 of 2209.Now,Vld 180gns.2800 av. velocity with 50.5 of 2209 and 2820 av. velocity with 51 of 2209.All these av. velocities had very close spreads. So there you are.I'd like to say,to Geoff that we all suffer from the disease which it's called AVAILABILITY, or SOLD OUT.So when you cannot find what you looking for, then you get whatever is there.
Cheers

Ok Copper I hear what your saying, but, have you got any projectile working well?? I can only help with the 180gn class projectile. VLD's @ around 2800-2820 fps with 2209 is where you have a good node to explore if you have the projectiles otherwise your wearing out a good barrel chopping and changing. Your loads need to be refined, .5 of a gn is too much of a jump. Try 49.6 going up to 50.6 in .2gns first 5 shot groups with jammed projectile .010" don't use your chrony if it's attached to the barrel as you now know where to explore. Speed is not king, accuracy is.
Ask on this site for some VLD's in 180 gn, someone may allow a 100 to go for testing purposes. Once you have one projectile working well by all means try others, by then you will know where to start.
Pm me if you want test targets, I have some of Williada's that i could share

I started with my 284 WIN with samples of 175gr SMK, 180 gr Hybrid and 162gr A-MAX. Both the Hybrid and SMK shot about the same, but the 162 A-MAX outdid both of the others.
When the A-MAX became un-obtainium, I switched to the 162 gr ELD-M and they did even better. I bought a box of 180gr ELD-M as well but haven't tried them yet.
I use about 51.5 gr of RL-16 which is close to 2209.

All of your feedback was terrific.Next Saturday I'm going to test some 168 and 180 projectiles at 1000yds.Next week, I'll try a few of your suggestions and I'll post any results.

Thanks
Copper
