284 Win and heavy bullets

#1 Postby PeteFox » Thu Jul 22, 2021 2:46 pm

I have a new barrel arriving soon, chambered in 284Win and throated long for heavy projectiles, specifically 197 Sierra MK.

I have to make up my mind on what powder to use and I'm thinking 2213 or 2217. I'm looking to tap into other shooters experiences if anyone has tried this 284/Sierra combination and are willing to share their experience. Or perhaps someone has tried the 190 Berger in a 284

Yes I know, should have a SAUM/WSM/280 if I want to do this, but I don't want either of those rounds and the question is about the 284 specifically. I have 600 new cases in 284 that fell from a truck so I'm stuck with the 284

Thanks
Pete

Pete,

I can't give you exactly what you want because mine is a 284 Shehane, probably about 30fps more than a standard 284. But can I suggest 2213SC. I used some out of favour Berger 195 EOLs for fire-forming a while back loaded to a very mild 2680fps. Here's three of the shoots at 1000yd that day. There was an even better fourth shoot of 59.8 which disappeared into the bowels of the computer somehow.

Conditions were as good as I've seen at 1000yd at Rosedale, but even at 2680fps the big 195EOLs will be well inside 180s in the wind at the longs. Same would apply for SMK197s.

Thank you Alan
I'm doing this for F Open Match Rifle.
My calculator says that I will be 5", 6.5" and 8" inside a 180 at 1000, 1100 and 1200 yds respectively for a 10mph cross wind.
As my wind reading skills at these ranges are crap, I need all the help I can get.

The big 'if' is that I need 2700 fps. Slower speeds change the equation considerably.

Pete,

I was achieving 2680fps easily. I always load a bit lighter for fire-forming. So unless your barrel is a slow one, you should be okay.

2213sc would be the first powder I try for that bullet. It works very well with 184s, but that 197 is a bloody big bullet.
