I personally don’t find my straight 284 with 180’s any more difficult to control or slower to shoot than my 6.5x47 shooting 130’s (note I cannot seem to master free recoil so shoot them both with a hold)

Also at the shorts the 284 doesn’t seem to stuggle with high x counts. It really makes me wonder why I play with the 6.5 at all but there is just something fun about shooting the little bullets from time to tome.

I used to feel the same way about my SAUM but the novelty of toasting barrels in 1000 rounds quickly wore off and I had to find an alternative, hence the SLR.
In running costs I estimate the 6.5 would be half the cost of the SAUM.
Am planning on trialing out some 147’s to see how they sail tomorrow at 800 yds.
The plan may fail but I’m intrigued to find out.

How did the 147's go for you out of the 6.5 SLR

Have tried them twice with different seating depths and powder charges so far, at 800 & 600 yds. Both times they showed real promise but had the odd vertical shot/s that opened up the group. Conditions and sighting haven’t been ideal. I intend doing a jump/jam test with them over as soon as I get an opportunity and the weather is in my favor. Haven’t given up on ‘em yet.

BTW: Have you managed to hammer any more 60.10’s with your SLR?

I zeroed my mike and got 0.2636" on the 147's and 0.2642" on the batch of 140 grain Berger Hybrids I'm currently shooting with a 6.5x284. Maybe some implications for velocity/pressure there ?

The Bergers are running at 3k with Lapua brass, 48.8 grains of 2209 and RWS primers and a 29" barrel. Be interesting to know what the 147's velocity would be, could be, probably won't be for me just yet ?

I'm wanting to see these new 147 ELD bullets go well - as with many of us - for a bunch of reasons BUT if ya wanna win a big comp with them then that's another ball game .......

Hi Tim
What barrel twist are you using?
Will the 1:8 stabilise the 147 gn pills ?
Cheers

Hi Paul,
I have been using them in my 8 twist and believe that will stabilize them. According to the twist rate calculator a 147 at 2850 fps in a 1:8 gave SG 1.59 in 7.5 twist SG 1.81. I am hoping the odd vert shot was a result of seating depth not twist rate or being out of a velocity node. Am still on a learning curve with this cartridge and the heavier pills, it’s a matter of trial and error and hope to find that Eureka moment. BTW Hornady have a sticker on the bottom of the 147's box saying "8.5 twist" The calculator gives that a SG 1.41
Have a 7.5 twist on order to try with the 147’s and 150g SMK’s when they turn up.

Hi Tim
Thanks for your great information
I’m going to run a standard 260 and I want to try the cheaper projectiles as Berger are pricing me out of the game. Not that I shoot much but I still want a accurate rifle to shoot in my travels.
Cheers

Aha, I got a handle on who I'm talking with now; how you been Tim. haven't been in the same place at the same time for a while :)

Have to organise to get a box or two; 8.5 is what Phil put in mine so might have to experiment.

No, not sure I have it in me anymore; get off to a good run and then fall in a hole. I reckon my lad Dean will line one up with it; he's got the eyes and focus I used to have and very keen to take the 6.5 off my hands.

Had a chance to test out the 147s today. Did a seating depth test with them and determined they prefer a .025” jump in my barrel.
I then did a round robin ladder test with them of 3 shots at each load starting at 42g and working up to 43.8g, in .3g increments (total of 21 shots) with .025” jump. Velocity ranged from 2765 at the lower end and went up to 2888 at the upper end. Primers at the upper end were starting to flatten out but they weren’t pancaked.
Loaded up some rounds at a probable velocity node to test at 700m for vertical spread but discovered I had forgotten to uniform the necks and had massive variations in neck tension so that idea was canned.
Keep ya posted when I get a chance to let em loose.

That would all depend on if you had one!
You may have to start up an Open Class in H-Class for wildcats and improved cartridges as not to deter those with off the rack rifles from coming out and having a go. Last thing you would want to do is allow them into the game and turn H-Class into an arms race like F-Class.
Keep it simple, fun and fair :)
Happy and safe X-Mas to ya.

Got around to testing out the 147’s today at 700m.

Come up from 300m was 14 moa which is about .5moa more than what my ballistics calculator predicted, based on G7 of .351

Conditions were fairly horrendous with a frontal fishtailing wind, mirage running right, left and boil, turning the target face into a wandering black blob.
Anyway, that enough with the excuses for not smashing a 90.?

Fired a 15 shot string to test vertical spread. They held ¾ 6 ring with 11 of the 15 X-Ring (vert wise).

A mate of mine also did some testing with his SLR and fired 3 X 10 shot groups with 140g Hybrids with one group holding X-Ring and the other 2 loads not far behind with just a couple of those pesky flyers spoiling the party.

When comparing wind settings there is a slight BC advantage to the 147s over the 140’s on the conditions we experienced today.

Still tinkering with them to see if I can shrink them down a bit more.
