Explanation of Ranking Point Calculations
  Why have rankings?
The fullbore rankings were originally created and run by Bert Bowden with the first publication being in July/August 2002 edition of ATR magazine. I haven't been able to find any published explanation from Bert of its purpose at that time. A few years later, Geoff Roberts, as part of his NRAA webmaster role, took over the administration of the Rankings, and put it into an online database, and added F-Class Standard and Open rankings. When he was replaced in that role, his successor did not continue with the rankings, so since late 2012 they have not been updated.
I believe it has several worthwhile purposes, with the main one being a recognition of recent achievement at Queens level. It recognises both success in competition and a commitment to attend a reasonable number of events. For those near the top of the rankings, it can be an incentive to attend more events, and those events will benefit from any increased attendance.

Basics of how the rankings are calculated
Points are awarded to placegetters in all Leadup and Queens events around Australia. Leadup events get significantly less points than Queens. Maximum points are awarded for winners and these reduce for placegetters, cutting out after a number of placings. Over time, points "decay" and eventually disappear. The points for ranking purposes are the sum of a shooter's top few (previously 6) decayed points amounts as at a particular date.
  Changes
When this system was first devised, calculations were kept fairly simple to ease the task of administering it. There is an opportunity to reduce some inequities by using more complex calculations. There are also ways in which it can be made more inclusive, by altering some of the basic parameters such as how far down the placings are awarded points, and how much points decay over time. Discussion was invited on the ozfclass forum about possible changes, and although there were a number of participants in that discussion who decided better not to change anything, it has been decided to take this opportunity to make some improvements. Hopefully, the advantages of these changes will be recognised and there won't be too much of an uproar. And there is always the option of changing back.
  Points for placings
Points are awarded according to the number of shooters in the field (based on the number who register a non-zero score at every range). For larger fields the placings points are steadily increased, and the number of places receiving points extended to be always about 33% of the field. The following table is used for all F-Classes. Note that that for field sizes that are in between the numbers in the LHS column, the figures from the lesser field size row apply (e.g. a field size of 6 or 7 uses the field size 5 row). Note also that these figures are for Queens events, and Leadup events are awarded exactly two thirds the points for all placings.

  Points decay
Every placing points amount holds its value for 30 days, then decays at a uniform rate to reach zero 1100 days (approx 3 years) after it was earnt (being the date of the last day of the Leadup or Queens event).
  Total ranking points
At a given date, this is the sum of the top 5 decayed points amounts. So in the Derivations list, if a shooter has more than 5 events listed, only the highest 5 points amounts from the Current Points column will be included in the total.
  Grading and divisions
The scores of all competitors regardless of grades or divisions will be pooled together to derive placings. Currently this only applies to F-Standard which commonly has A and B grades, and sometimes, divisions. Where there are ties between scores in different grades or divisions, the countback rules from the SSRs will be used to break the tie and award placings (subject to availablity of score data).
  Disclaimer
This ranking system is not a definitive guide to the ability of the shooters on it. For example there are shooters on the list (or not on the list at all) who might be very highly ranked if they shot more often. It is conceded that many shooters find it difficult because of their location or personal circumstances to attend multiple Queens shoots. However this should be a reasonably good guide to the achievement level of those who shoot 2 or 3 Queens events per year, as long as the aforementioned limitations are recognised.
