What 7MM?

#1 Postby secretsquirrel » Sat Aug 01, 2009 6:09 pm

Was just reading about the poms winning the world f class championship at bisley and saw references to them shooting 7mm and the yanks shooting 6.5-284. my question is what particular 7mm caliber were the poms shooting? cheers.

Or from the US Longrange forum:

The GB team all but one used 7wsm of some sort ,the other used a straight 284

I came 3rd with a 284 shehane that i put together myself. I used a 6.5-284 all last year and scored well on calmer days and at 8-900yds but at 1000 yds with the high twitchy winds that we get over here I got killed compared to the 7mms ,thats why i changed to the 7mm ,i shot with the south africans and most were using straight 284 all shooting the 180 grn bergers

Go the 7's. :D

Another upside of 284 is longer barrel life. I would not go to a 7wsm though.

Why not go another 0.62 of a mm and we are back where we started?

Actually, if someone would make a decent high BC 30 cal projectile, that would be a good idea. Theoretically a 213gn 30 cal of the same shape as a 180gn 7mm will have the same BC. But nothing from the major maunfacturers does that, so why would you want to put up with the extra recoil. The Berger 180gn VLD is a big factor in the current success of 7mms in F-Class.

Tim, the 284 has more capacity than the 308. It can push 175/180g projectiles with ease.
That is the attraction of FO for me....any cartridge.

Yep, I know what you are both saying but it is a cost issue as much as anything for me, I am only a hacker. TR/F class is less than a quarter of the shooting I do and my .308 and .223 are nice and cheap and uncomplicated to run. I am just stirring.

It just seems as if it is coming full circle again, I went through all this with hunting calibres and it looks like I will just end up with another .270 again after all these years or possibly a 7mm 08.

There are less than a dozen F standard competitors down here, when I am due another barrel I will consider one of the 6.5's or maybe a 7mm 08 and going to F open? It is a way off yet.

7mms

#10 Postby a.JR » Mon Aug 03, 2009 9:00 am

Hi All , After some years of testing 7mms i think the most recent one is about the pick .. I have tried a Short Imp 7mm mag, a 7/6.5x55 Imp , a 284wImp, a 7/300WM Imp ,all were let down in some way in exact powder capacity but most lost out in the brass quality..This led to the present 7mm based on a Lapua 9.3x 62 case ..JR..Jeff Rogers

a.JR, is that a typo, 51gns of 2209 with 175 Sierras to get 3000 fps?. That is the same load I use (51-51.7gns)in my 284 to get 2800 fps, out of 3 different barrels.

Hi Rod , Spent so little time on 175s, batchs we had were substandard .. we found only approx decrease of 40 fps against the 168smk .. Barrels are always barrels, some good, some fast ,some not..Last direct contact with this case was on a Krieger 30ins , [q fps, out of 3 different barrels.[/quote]
