Patrick,

Are you intending to shoot F-Class with this rifle? If you are then if there is a possibility of changing your order then I would strongly recommend you do so. I believe the Remington model you are buying has a 1 in 12" twist barrel. This will not stabilise the 80 grain projectiles you'll need to be competitive with a .223. You will need something no slower than 1 in 8" twist. If you are using varmint projectiles, a 1 in 12 will be fine, but as you are taking an interest in this website, then I am assuming you may intend to compete with it in F-Class. I would also recommend a barrel of at least 28" length, but that is not as critical as having the correct twist.

Hope this helps you in time.

Alan

Alan is 110% right.

For F-Standard the minimum bullet allowed by the rules is a Sierra 69gr and Sierra's minimum twist rate for them is a 1 in 10".

The Sierra 69's struggle out past 600m. They'll get there but they'll go subsonic between 700m and 800m when fired through a short factory tube. That means that accuracy will be non existent at 800m.

Out past 600m is the domain of the 80gr bullets and for them you'll want a 1 in 8" twist rate. For factory, that's Sako or Tikka or 1 in 7" for the Savage.

If you're set on Remington / F-Standard combination ( I won't criticise brand preference) then look at the 308.

The other option is if there are some shooters out there with a 30" long 7 or 8" twist barrel which is too worn for an A grade shooter, but suitable for rechambering back to 27-28" long. If so, can someone donate one to him for a good cause. My 22 cal barrels were other shooters rejects and they were fine for another few 1000 shots.

CHEERS LADS

#5 Postby celtic12bore » Sat Oct 24, 2009 2:12 pm

:D
THANKS FOR THE REPLY LADS,LOOKS LIKE I CAUSED A BIT OF CONFUSION,MY BAD.
FIRST OFF I AM VERY INTERESTED IN F CLASS SHOOTING AND WILL AS SOON AS FINANCES ALLOW GET STUCK IN,AND HAVING RESEARCHED THIS TOPIC TO DEATH,WILL EVENTUALLY GO FOR A
.260REM OR A 6.5/47 LAPUA ECT.
I HAVE JOINED A RANGE NOT FAR FROM HOME(PARRA RANGE)
AND HAVE FOR MANY SUNDAYS HAPPILY SHOT 6mm PPC TO 300MTRS
(BORROWED). I ALSO INTEND TO GET INVOLVED WITH FERAL CONTROL
AND SO MADE THE DESCISION ON THIS OUTFIT.

IT WAS THIS OR WAIT AT LEAST ANOTHER 6>9MONTHS FOR FINANCES
AND GET SOMETHING BUILT(PLUS BUILD WAIT TIME).

SO I DECIDED ON THE REM FOR BENCH SHOOTING AT PARRA AND HUNTING(VARMINT STYLE) AND START SAVING AGAIN WHILE SHOOTING

THANKS FOR THE CONCERN AND OFFER OF HELP,IF THERE IS ANYTHING I CAN DO PLEASE ASK

Given what you've just posted.

Have you considered a Savage in 6-BR?

It's a fair option...
