Right handed, left eye dominant

#1 Postby CodeBasher » Mon Jun 21, 2010 12:42 pm

I have a niece just coming into to shooting, she had no end of trouble trying get a comfortable position around a rifle. After a quick test I ascertained she is left eye dominant but surprisingly is right handed.

What is the best solution to getting around her condition.

1) Shoot right handed and force her to train the right eye?

or

2) Shoot left handed?

Thanks guys.

Code,

I'm the same as your niece.

When I shot pistols I kept both eyes open and with a 2 handed IPSC hold my left eye was dominant - no worries.

Now I shoot rifles, I just shoot right handed and close my left eye, and sight through the scope with my right.

Works for me

Regards, John

Hi Code

I too shoot right handed but left eye dominant. On my TR Central sight i have a piece of tin to act as a blind to allow me to keep both eyes open. And when i use my F/class i use an eye patch.
I find closing the left eye puts to much strain on my right.

hope this has help

cheers cookie

I almost went blind in my right eye which made me use my left eye.
I started out with a purpose made high tapered scope base on a Rem action in a right hand stock. I just leaned over the rifle and used my left eye.
Now I shoot left handed but I use a right hand action. It works for me, as the triger hand is always on the mat and the free hand that some people use to squeze there rear sand bag is used to load and unload the rifle. There is always a clear view into the action as well.
Cheers

I've seen two people shoot right handed left eye dominant using an outrigger scope mounting.

It seems to work for them.

Thanks for the feed back. I'll start her off using a patch over the left eye and see if she adapts.

Just get some super high scope mounts, just like Jeff Cochran.

I had a tall, one piece scope base made up for a Rem short action, you can have it if it helps getting a new junior shooter on the mound.

Try this link. It is mainly on hand guns but has some useful info pertaining to any shooter. The link should also allow you to look at the other articles on eye dominance. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_mBQY/is_11_53/ai_n20512658/?tag=rbxcra.2.a.33

Hope the link works, can't find a way of posting it direct, had to type it in
Ray.
Tried it on "preview" it works 8)
