Vic Police Rifle Club OPM 2017

#1 Postby fclass556 » Tue Oct 24, 2017 12:25 pm

Just a reminder to all that the VicPol RC OPM ' 3 x 1000 Yards ' shoot is being held at Wellsford Range Bendigo on Sat 25 Nov 2017. All classes are catered for including this year 'Service Target Rifle' ... To help organisers for catering, trophies we are asking for pre entry and payment prior to the shoot. No entries will be accepted on the day. Ive had some feedback that this method isn't acceptable as its not the normal method but as it turns out, every other shooting discipline ( Smallbore, Shotgun, Benchrest, Handgun etc ) all use this method and adds to the success of the day because of the known quantity. Hence pre entry for Queens shoots. To assist smaller clubs like us, this is the most practical method and should be used more often. It should be a big day run in conjunction with the VRA's long range shoot on the 26th ( the day after ). We have great prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in every grade along with $1500 in cash prizes via our sponsor Delta Tactical. If there are any queries or people looking to enter, don't hesitate to contact us via the clubs website http://www.vprc.org.au and email vprc379@hotmail.com and we are only too happy to assist.

Cheers, Andy Drinkwater. Club Captain.

Well , what an intro into to the Bendigo rifle range . Even in light conditions, there was no certainty of a 60 at all . We had half of the field of nearly 40 shooters from PRS ,
shooting “ Target Service Rifle “ which is basically practical Rifle on a five ring target . It was devided into nato and open . Muzzle brakes are aloud ( check rules please) if they were factory fitted .

We really need to tap into this resource of shooters and we already have the rules in ssr’s. So much potential here and it was good to see how these rules were used in a First at a opm in decades!

In open there was 7 open shooters comprising of ex Vic team members and current Au members looking to tune their rifles at the 1000 yds .
After the second Range , anyone could have won it . But M Cave took home the bacon with a marvellous 60.8!! Then Bendigo wanted its pound of flesh delt cruel blows on good shooters caught up in crap and the 600 yd gully monster !! Wind reading was in the vertical and windage , in which is where I lost most of my points generally at 2 and 4 O’clock. My rifle is hammering with beautiful waterline. As was all of the Au team members that were present. So good news !
Thanks Vic Pol and Andy ( soon to be a Qlder) and my wonderful hosts for a great time on the range !!

Are you happy with how your 280AI is running Graham?

It is great to hear of a club putting on something different, with 3x1000yd ranges. =D> =D> =D>

It is also great to hear they enticed PRS and practical rifle shooters by allowing muzzle brakes in this special event. =D> =D> =D>

Hi Willow, yes I’m very happy with the 280 ai except the misfires. Talking to a Stolle Guru on the weekend and we may have a fixed the problem.

The only thing is I’ve put the 280 ai away and am just working on the .284 barrels and 7-08 ai .
I’ll screw it back in later after NZ . I wish I had the 280 ai today at Wellsford!!

Hi Graham, I am in the process of revamping one of my 17lb comp rifles but keeping it at 7mm, the single bolt action allows me a choice of 280, 280ai or 284, I have experience with the 7-08ai but at Belmont the 180 grainers fair better and the 7.08ai is under powered for that task at the 500m & 1000 yard distances

The FPS is needed to be around the 2900 to 2940 fps mark and not stress the cases, the barrel will need to run about 1500 rounds for the season at which time I can rebarrel again.

Thank you gentlemen for those that Pm'd your advice on choosing between the 280, 280AI & 284/Shehane, as this is a simply chamber change by just reaming the current chamber (has only 250 rounds on it) I have decided to go 280AI, gunsmith will also make the dies. Will also add a tuner to the 30" barrel as I changed out the 80x March scope to a 60x March and saved 6 ounces. I suppose that if the rifle is inconsistent I could rechamber again to another calibre in the 280/284 range.

I do have a 7mm SAUM (LG 17lb) also, but a little lighter recoil .280/284 for competing at the shorter distance under windy conditions I feel is needed, the 280ai I can use at 300M & 500m Fly events.
