Hello Everyone
I just thought id put my idea for a new F Open rifle up here and see if anyone in the community has either done something similar or if people have any pointers/tips to help me.
Ive recently picked up a GRS Hybrid stock on sale to suit a Tikka T3/T3X and Im thinking about picking up a cheap 243/308 T3/T3X to then use as the action.
My idea is to get my Smith to take the Tikka apart, true action/check it over for any defects and then get him to install a long target barrel (30" heavy varmint Bartlein/Krieger etc) and chamber it in 284 Win. Ive discovered recently that Tikka actions are smaller in diameter so ill be limited to barrels that start out at 1.200" instead of 1.250"
Has anyone here done something along these lines? I don't expect to keep up with guys shooting Barnards/Kelblys etc but id like to be competitive if Im shooting well and find a good load.
My main concern is hanging a big long heavy barrel off the front of an action that has a magazine well instead of a rigid strong single shot target action.
Any thoughts, tips or just plain banter greatly appreciated.
Cheers

I think your main concern re the repeater action is justified. Personally, I wouldn't use a repeater style action with a heavy barrel without a barrel block. But, I only use single shot actions.
No help I know but your call.

A shooter in Cairns has a Tikka built .284W and it shoots very well. He keeps the Barnard ect. shooters on their toes.

Thats very interesting to hear, do you know if hes on this Forum? Would love to hear how he got it built and what sort of barrel contour he uses.

He is not on the forum. I know C.R.M. did the barrel fit ect.. because he borrowed my reamer for them to use. If I see him to-morrow I will ask for more info.

Shane at CRM puts together some competative guns using Tikka actions.
I would not go for a 243 for f class shooting myself. If a 6mm is the desired cal I'd go brx xc or dasher.
If you want to compete, then 284 or maybe a 6.5 sweed or if your willing to go wildcat a 6.5 Super LR.
I'm currently running 2 x 6.5 super LR rifles. Using Palmer brass the 3050 node is achievable on a barnard, my sevond gun is a Tikka action in a PRS rifle that still holds its own at 900m. Probably running 140s around 2800 to 2850. It just has something a Creedmore doesn't.

I’m pretty sure the OP has decided on a 284win, but is looking for a cheap Tikka with 308bolt to use purely for the action only as it will suit his stock.

Hi Mate I run a #9 profile heavy varmint on the tikka it finished at 31" it started out at 1.25 and PK turned it down to suit the tikka profile, as Trev mentioned I used his .315 nk reamer, currently I'm running 175smk at 2800fps with some pretty good results. I also run a 260 rem with the same barrel profile on the tikka too.
There is another guy in our club with a tikka action in a mastin stock with a barrel block on a 1.25 straight barrel it seems to work well also.
Cheers Brett

Re: 284 Win Tikka F Open Build
Yeah I have done it. I have a blued t3 action and ordered a custom 1.130” bartlein 30 inch barrel for it. No trueing work was done on the action. I did make a large custom bedding block that had an integral follower in it, screwed it all together and glued it into the stock, then re bedded the action. It’s chambered in 308 and shoots 200 hybrids in ftr. Does it work? Well it got me into 6th in the WA queens with 48 of the country’s best competing. Yes it’s competitive. I honestly don’t think there is a better off the shelf action to build on. Change the trigger to something a bit lighter is all you need. For a barrel just go a normal hv profile then I would have the 1.25” section turned down 0.120” rather than custom order a parallel.
