.284 Petersen brass

#1 Postby Old Trev-39 » Wed May 04, 2022 8:00 pm

Hi All,
Have acquired some of the above and in comparing with Lapua found that the water volume of the Petersen brass holds 1.6 grns. less than the Lapua. I was thinking of my start load at 2 grns. less than I have used in the Lapua cases. Your thoughts on this and has any one out there had experience with Petersen brass in this caliber. Powder to be used either 2209 or 2213sc.
Awaiting your thoughts and comments
Cheers,
Trevor.

Just out of interest Phil, what powder charge of 09 were you running in the peterson? I cant seem to get the 180 hybrids to 2800fps in QLD without small signs of pressure

When quoting 2209 charge weights, probably best to say old or new recipe? I know that new 2213SC (in the 1Kg bottles) is faster and have heard similar about 2209. This could account for the pressure signs. I suspect 2213SC may become more popular in the 284 now.

Spot on Alan, everyone must realise that there MAY be variations in powder burning rates from batch to batch. All published loads should be reduced by at least 2% and work back up looking for pressure signs. Velocity is only an INDICATION of pressure and may I say, not a very good one either. I recently tested two different batch lots of the "new" 2209 against my batch of "old" 2209 and found all 3 batches to be the same....surprising, but it should not be assumed that this is the norm!!
My advice for what it is worth, when working up powder charges is leave the chronograph at home until the right pressure is determined, then chronograph. I see much written that indicates that one should be loading to such and such velocity, I regard this to be the wrong approach to finding the right load for your rifle. First requirement is load to an acceptable operating pressure, fine tune accuracy by tweaking the powder charge and seating depth (in that order) then chronograph to check SD/ extreme spread of a meaningful string at least 10 shots, preferably 15 shots. All of this will put your average MV in the correct range for your chambering and barrel. My advice again do not focus on velocity alone and do not load to a particular velocity because someone said you should. My thoughts for what they are worth.

I run Peterson brass in a 284 Shehane running 2213sc - 54.7gr in my current barrel produces great accuracy and no pressure signs. In a previous barrel 54.4gr was the magic number. I fireform using 53gr of 2213sc.
