I have shot possibles at 300, 500 and 600 with mine in .223 based on an Omark. If I do my part it is accurate, ran in very quickly too.

I have no doubt the kriegers etc of this world are better, and they are a lot dearer,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, are they really worth the money? Do they last any longer? How much more accurate are they or is it the higher level actions they are mated to and the closer attention to ammunition, technique etc etc.

I went through this last year and agonised over the choices but in the end went with the cheapest option and haven't been disappointed, my complete outfit is owes me under $1200(with gunsmithing and including scope and mounts) with the only secondhand gear being the stock(sixpack of VB) and the Omark action ($40)

Really it is up to the individual, I am not an expert and at the moment I am the restriction when shooting not my gear, if that changes I will go for a higher priced barrel.

Sounds like the proof is in the shooting. :)

thx guys

Lawton $605
Kreiger $600
MAB STAINLESS $600
Truflite $650-700
Maddco $600-650
Estimated

Looks to me as they r all similar in price with this many option it makes it hard to choose my last barrel was a truflite brught over 10 years ago done around 3,500-4,000 rounds

Geez don't you hate that, at least I had a major price difference to sway me when I was choosing, I would agonise for days over this if it was me.

Really they are so close here that price doesn't make one a clear winner, the Krieger seems very cheap and that would have been my first choice except for price last year, but I was only going on what others were saying back then. I am more than happy with my MAB and would buy another.

Good luck.

Barrel choice

#9 Postby bartman007 » Wed Jun 09, 2010 1:29 pm

Cookie,

So long as it's not as good as my new barrel, then I'll be happy ;-)

Are you sure Aldi or K-Mart don't have one?

On a sensible note though:

I've just gone through the selection process, and I'm going with a Krieger. The only hassle is the lead time to procure. Mine is currently due in around 4 weeks. It's been on order for 4 weeks......

They say, you can't buy a score, but hey, in your case there may be an exception ;-)

Cheers,

I'd have every other barrel on that list before a MAB.

Just looking at a new barrel myself
I am using a Mab 3 grove fluted (2000 rounds) in front of a Quadlock and was shooting more centres with the club gun, an Enfield and worn out barrel ??????
Contemplating a Border or Tobler
I hear Toblers are very reasonably priced but very accurate, quick turn around and most of all Aussie :D , although plug cut. But seem to last
Boarder, very accurate, Scottish :D , cut rifling :D ,expensive, I dont know about turnaround
Krieger seem worth a go aswell ,cut

The simple answer is this ppl
Look at what barrels are winning in australia and overseas short range and long range comps.
This will narrow your lists down
BTW the list posted on most long range web site in aus are not up to date.
Cheers

We use MAB's and get very good performance. Yet to see a bad one, unlike some big brands names. They are not as flash sounding as some, but that is mainly hype and brand fixation.

I actually hand lap mine now before using them, and they come up as good as any others. One thing is for sure, they are straight. They don't have a nice bore finish like a Lawton or Krieger.

Lead times are pretty good, and no need to go through idiotic paperwork for the US.

Barrel names are just words, they don't really mean much on the range. My test is this: go to any range where you don't know the people shooting. Now guess what barrels they are using by looking at their scores.....you can't because it is impossible. Same goes for actions, sights, scopes, rests, etc etc. Winning scores are not a popularity contest.
