Looking for a decent scope without the outlay of a Nightforce.
Been hearing good things about the Sightron S111 8-32x56.
Good price ex US.
It's going on an old Savage 110FP .308, so it's not realy a serious
"F"-class rig.
Allthough it will do the job if I do mine.
Any opinions on this choice??.
Cheers
Scope on a budget.

The Sightrons are good scopes and I just recently got a 10-50x60mm delivered to my door for under $AU1000.00. Dont over look the Weaver T36 target scope, its a fixed magnification but 36X is pretty much all you need.
I have a couple of NF BRs in 8-32x56mm and they are excellent as well but pricey as you struggle to get a better price in the USA. You could get a Weaver T36 delivered to your door from the USA for under $AU500.00 and that is damn good value.
Dont ask me where I buy them from in the USA because our local importers who want high profits will attempt to stop them from selling to Oz. Use Google and you will find good prices and good suppliers!

Ian,
In my opinion, 36X is too high for a fixed power scope unless you've had enough experience to know that you don't need lower magnification in heavy mirage. I wind down as low as 15X and know others who do the same. I have a 24X Weaver and that is I think a better compromise than 36X for me at least.

Hi Jeff,
The Weaver does sound good.
But with the rifle not realy being a full blown "F" class rig I'd like to keep it a bit more usable...you know a bit more general purpose.
A fixed 24x would somewhat limit that.
Then again I can allways just throw my 4.5-14 back on it when the need arrises.

G'Day All,
consider the Leupold 6.5-20x40EFR or the 8.5-25 LRT as well, no point having 2 scopes as they both require zeroing after a swap (although with proper mounting you can still maintain zero within 1moa reliably after swapping) and the chances are the needed scope for a hunt will be in its box or vice versa (been there done that)
Both should handle the recoil of the 308 and you can still wind them down to a low power for hunting.
I started F class with a 6.5-20 and it was perfect, but ended u with the NF 8-32x56BR model, its a big and awkward for hunting unless you intend to stay put and snipe.
Cheerio Ned

I have a leupold 8-25 LR TGT and have just bought a Sightron 8-32X from the US for $850. The controls on the leupold feel a bit better but the optics of both are perfect. The added power of the sightron is very welcome for target shooting and i would recommend it . I have not tried any more powerful scopes yet, and did not want to order a 10-50X online without using such a monster of a scope first. (60mm objective) You can buy 2 sightrons for the price of a Nightforce and still have alot of change !
