Tomorrow I get to go pick up my remington 700 sps varmint 308 and finally get my f class under way, and I'm excited in case you couldn't tell. So if anyone has a decent stock for sale to suit please let me know.

Me again. I have a sightron s2 big sky 36x42, do I need a 20 moa rail to shoot 800m successfully?

I'm sure that I've posted this somewhere recently:

Looking at the scope you've bought. They have a total 40 MOA of elevation possible & the same of windage. You should be looking to get the best possible performance out of those restrictions. If you're loading a FS gun for the .308, you might expect to need something in the order of 25 MOA elevation between 300 & 1000 yards. That leaves 15 MOA of adjustment, but if your rail is flat, there's only 20 MOA between the mechanical (which hopefully is also optical) centre of the scope & run-out-of-adjustment, so you can't do the needed distance if the scope rail is parallel to the barrel. The maths say at least 5 MOA is needed.

Now there's another problem. Even the Sightron with it's particular adjustment technique may (or may not) run out of windage capability at the top & bottom of its travel. That mightn't matter at the bottom (300) where you don't need all that much wind, but it's more than likely going to be needed at 1000 yards. Therefore, it is preferable to have the greatest distance stop at a reasonable adjustment before it tops out - let's say 10 MOA.

We already need 5 MOA to get to 1000, plus this 10, so our rail needs a notional 15 MOA lean on it. 15MOA off the 20 from centre down means that 300 will still be 5 MOA clear of the stops & thus usable. However, it's not unusual for barrels to take a droop, so 20 MOA would be an acceptable rail to start with.

Well I went to the local range today and tried out my new rifle and only managed a 44 with a harris bipod and playing with the scope @300m. Then I used a very nice rifle and got a 60.5 so I was very happy with that!!
