155g Hybrid projectiles ?

#1 Postby Josh Cox » Wed Apr 09, 2014 7:42 pm

Have read a great deal of info regarding jump / jam etc etc, apparently the Hybrid was a big step towards making the jump/jam less of an issue for group accuracy.

What have you found in using these projectiles, what did your TR / FS rifle shoot the best, jump ?, jam ?, which powder / muzzle velocity ?.

I know every rifle is different, just keen to know what others have found.

In both of my rifles I have found the Noslers are extraordinary with 10 thou jump, 45 of 2206 and CCI LR mag primers.

What about 2156 Sierra's, HBC ?.

Josh,
I used the 2156s for the last 3 years and have started using the hybrids for the last 12 months. In 3 different barrels I have found the sierras to be extremely insensitive to seating depth, the hybrids where more sensitive but after some work did produce slightly better groups past 300m. My load for the sierras was 46.0g of 2208, cci br2, @ 2950 fps. This load tuned out to be great for the hybrids as we'll producing similar velocity.
Are you using magnum primers in a 308 or did I miss read that?

Thanks, yes using Magnum primers, did some chrono testing early in the process and found I was getting a lower velocity spread ( and cleaner cases ).

Below is one of my tests, I did test LR versus LR Magnum primers on a number of occasions with pretty much the same results:

Chronograph results for Barnard , 30" truflite 13:1
All handloads from Auto Charge, from a hot and dirty Barrel.
A) Winchester HBC factory ( circa 44.0 of 2206H )
B) 44.5 of 2206H, CCI Large rifle primer, zero tolerance
C) 44.5 of 2206H, CCI Large rifle Magnum primer, zero tolerance

Shot A B C
1 2878 2910 2902
2 2847 2899 2910
3 2820 2924 2919
4 2836 2899 2902
5 2851 2929 2905
High 2878 2929 2919
Low 2820 2899 2902
Average 2846 2912 2908
Range 58 30 17

I was using 155gn Hybrids in my 308 and did a lot of fiddling with seating depth and it ended up preferring .030" jump. Quite a few other 308s preferred .030" jump with the 155 Hybrids as well apparently.
I tried small and large primer brass and I had bad results with one bad lot of CCI BR2s, though the other lots were better. Did the lot of LR primers you used have the white writing or more silver coloured writing? Anyone who had issues with the BR2s was always with one of the lots which had the white writing on the box.

I used 2206H but cant remember the velocity, though it grouped very well at 900yds which was as far as I tested it. I cant do any more testing with it as I have gave the barrel away when it was fairly new in a moment of madness.

RDavies, I had a look in the cupboard and found that I have two 500 count boxes of the white labelling and have not had any trouble with either box.

Graham, im sure you meant to say AR2208 as that is how it is expressed in the FS rules! :)

I'm interested to know if they are exactly the same or just equivalents?

One and the same. ADI make a lot of powder for yanks. I have a list but don't know how to put it up.

This link should take you to the ADI Powders Handloaders' Guide and the page with the ADI powder equivalents;

Still pulling my f'ing hair out trying to get the hybrids to fly for my rifle.

Talked to anyone one at the NQRA Queens that owned up to using or having tried hybrid 155's, I could find only two shooters using hybrids and being happy with them.

Ten thou jam was the consensus.

My barrel is a truflite 11:1, it should love these projectiles.

From my testing I am finding the noslers and hbc's quite compliant and punching small vertical.

What size groups are you getting with them at short and long range?
