Re: Hornady ATIP 230GN 30cal
If i had a tighter twist barrel on my 300WSM I would give them a run.
If, and its a big IF they could be made to shoot as consistently as the 215 Berger, and IF the BC measures up to the claim they would make a great bullet for match rifle distances in F-open

Re: Hornady ATIP 230GN 30cal
years ago Hornady made the original amax with aluminium tips.
then they brought out amax with plastic tips and told us why plastic was superior.
now we see the return of aluminium and are told it is worth more money, and packaged and priced accordingly.
who do you turn to at a time like this?
I see that it is mostly tactical guys buying aluminium, looking for any way to avoid the wind.
the old 7mm 162 gn aluminium tipped amax were longer than the berger 180s are now, and then were made shorter after a while.

Re: Hornady ATIP 230GN 30cal
I’ve shot the 6mm 110gr bullets (only had 25 of them) and shot and tested them. Excellent! I just received another 300 more. I’ve shot quite a bit of the 135 and 153 6.5mm bullets. I’ve shot them out to a 1k yards with no complaints.
The 230gr ATIPS I finally shot some about 2 months ago. Only out to 430 yards and they shot/held an honest .25moa. In fact at 117 yards the group size was .20moa and at 430 yards it was a .16moa. I didn’t clock them for velocity but the 225 ELDM’s and 230SMK are coming out at an honest 2900fps. Yes the gun is chambered in 300PRC. Barrel length is 32” and is a 1-9 twist.

Just this past weekend or two the PRS Series Finale was held. Yes I know not F class or hi power shooting but what was interesting was 4 out of the top 5 shooters all shot Hornady ATIP bullets.

Thanks Frank,
I'm giving them a crack this weekend at 700m, I'll let you know.

Is it necessary to have the hornady seating stem to seat these bullets or will Redding/Whidden/Forster still work ok?

Willow, The first ones I got I didn’t have the Hornady seating stem and loaded the 6.5mm bullets and the 6mm’s with no issues. I’d say as long as you don’t have excessive neck tension and or your jamming the press ram hard down onto the bullet you won’t have a problem.
I forget which caliber (think it was 6.5mm) the Hornady guys told me I could take a drill bit (sorry but don’t remember which size) and I would run the drill but up into the seating stem and give it more clearance so it doesn’t push on the tip directly.
That being said for the cost and the amount of bullets I’m loading I did buy all of the seating stems.

Also I did load 40 rounds (6.5CM) for one of the Scout Snipers at the school house a few months ago. I loaded him half of each the 135 and 153gr. Bullets. He told me they shot fantastic for him. I taught another class just 4 weeks ago today at the school house and got a chance to talk to him directly. I just sent him another 50 loaded rounds all with 135gr bullets. He just got them Wed. This week.
The barrel on his rifle is a 1-7.5 twist.
All the feedback I’ve had and from what I’ve shot all has been positive.

Re: Hornady ATIP 230GN 30cal
Had a crack with the 230 ATIPS today.
From a 308 FTR rifle, 1:10 Bartlein 300/308 HP, ADI LR primer brass, ADI 2208, 45-43 in one grain increments.
Velocities 2594-45GN, 2568-44GN and 2514-43GN.
Firstly I'll start by saying, I do not know anyone that has truly got the big projectiles working well from the 308 case (some claim to, but their vertical grouping shows otherwise). I've played with 210 VLD, 215 Hybrids, 230 Hybrids and now 230 Hornady ATIPS, nothing looks super awesome.
Have got the Berger 155.5 shooting very flat, but it would appear I can't read wind for shit.
From my 308, not terribly interested in persuing these any further for my FTR guns. That said, I couldn't get the 210 VLD / 215 or 230 Hybrids to shoot either, last week I had a shoot of one of "The Greek God of Steel" FO guns (300WSM, 800M at Canberra), shooting 215 hybrids, and it shot awesome (well over 2950FPS, it was so much fun, I think I wee'd in my pants a little bit each shot).
To those that suggested the 185-200 realm for FTR, I now get it.
Why, I do not know.
What was interesting: between 45-44 grains the velocity difference was 26 FPS, yet 44-43 grains was 54 FPS, thoughts ? (% of oxidiser in the powder mix ?)

Re: Hornady ATIP 230GN 30cal
I seem to remember a guy with a target rifle shooting 9 Xs in a row from 900m at Townsville. I got the impression that guy could read the wind???
I tend to agree with the 185-200 for FTR. I reckon the 210s and 215s do work in some barrels/rigs but would also accept that they may also be sacrifising some elevation for a bit of a gain on wind.
Horses for courses really, it gets into that headspace game. If someone is happy with them they will do better with them.
