South Australian Queens
Any news, gossip, slander, insinuations or allegations as to how things are going at the South Oz Queens. I see the 2nd day of the lead up was called off for inclement weather.
Any stories anyone?

Well done Ian Pavey, Rob Halloran and especially Ed(?) Kanik
. Maybe he was inspired by the Daryl Barlow performance in Brisbane.
Looking through the range scores there are a few sad stories that need telling - Bruce - what happened to you at the last range??? And P Janzo how can you get 3 60s on the first day then a 52 at the last 600??? We look forward to hearing some very good excuses.

the pest has now reached the status of legend, and it cannot be taken from him.
60.7, 60.6, and 60.8, in winds 20 to 30 miles per hour, and changing from 3 0'clock to 1.30 and back again repeatedly. the man is superhuman, but more to the point, his 300 wsm was holding superb elevation.
i myself, on the other hand, was subhuman, and plagued by serious elevation on top of that.
lower light continues to cement its reputation as the house of pain.
a great reality check. open has now reached the level where exceptional accuracy is not special, but necessary, to win. then you have to read the wind.
as an aside, two tents were totally destroyed by the wind, which made me feel a bit creepy in mine, even though it was guy roped in a serious way.
bruce.
p.s.
bartman's photos were obviously of the good bits at the leadup.

Congratulation to IanP 2 State Championships in a row well done
(Ian if you get a chance post some pics of what the interstaters missed out on i.e. trophy and gongs)
Well done to Stew coming back at him with a 60.4 in testing conditions at the last 800m with Ian having a 4 point lead.
PJ scratch out a great result as I watch him scrap and scrape for every point.
Congratulations to Rob H on the FSA win and Matt & Bill bringing up the rear
A good shoot by the newly name MACHINEGUN EDDY and MikeW first queens 2nd in FSB
Congrates also to PJ ,RobH & EddyK Grand Agg wins
Some Cal that we used
IanP 284Shehane
Stew 284W
PJ 300WSM
Mark H 6.5X47
RB 284 & 6X47 (BTW 6mm's IMO are subject to elevation in strong winds)
Bruce 284W
Timmy 7mmSAUM
Dave Z 284W
GlennH (will get back on that one)
Most of the competitors had some elevation issues throughout the match
Now some goss for Rod D got 2 misses with my sighters at 700m first on was a 6 and I considered myself lucky to have end up with a 56.4 in the end.
Great shoot very difficult condition at times but a great time had by all.
2 new shooters to F-Open showed some good results for their first Queens
And are both very keen to do better next year.
Cheers
RB

Or maybe this would have been more appropiate for Bruce
"Homo sapiens non urinat in ventum"
as PJ said "Vescere bracis meis"
and Ian Said "Quidquid id est, timeo Danaos et dona ferentes."
then bruce said Sentio aliquos togatos contra me conspirare
and I replied "Te audire non possum. Musa sapientum fixa est in aure"
so thats about it I guess?

The SA Queens 150th was commemorated with special edition medals and badges of outstanding quality, (unlike my scanned image of them). Even the ribbons attached to the medals were made so as to keep them flat when worn.
It was amazing winning a second consecutive SA Championship in FO. I was pretty sure the win last year was a bit of a fluke but twice in a row suggests I might actually have had some input into the result.
I hate the Lower Light Rifle Range (Official State Range) with a vengeance simply because it is the most challenging range in our state. Even driving to the range requires a 4 wheel drive with centre diff lock when it rains, or you could perish en-route just trying to get there.
The event is always well run and this year vehicles could drive up onto the range mound areas, so getting the equipment to the mound was much easier.
The shooting conditions for the Queens were much better than for the lead up event which got washed out. The wind as always at this range, fish tailed, changed direction regularly and as a special treat would cease altogether for periods just long enough to keep you guessing what was happening. Wind velocity changes occurred every few minutes with changes up to 6 moa.
The amazing thing about the SA Queens is that the shooting fraternity, TR and F-Class get along like good mates always do, with plenty of mutual respect and interest in each others outcomes.
I witnessed some amazing scores shot in difficult conditions and also some top shooters humbled when the wind became totally unpredictable. Richard Braund amazed me with his comeback from two zero value sighters to score a 6 on his first scoring shot.
I struggled on the first day coming to terms with fish tailing head winds but came back strong on the second day dropping only 1 point in three ranges. The final day which included 2 x 800m ranges I managed not give any points away and maintain my 4 point lead from the day before. Just as well as I shot a 57 on the final range to secure the win but Stuart Braund shot a 60 which closed the margin down to a 1 point victory.
I was pretty nervous in the last detail as the championship was mine to lose. I did not feel confident in the changing conditions but managed not to drop too many points. It was a great relief when I knew I had managed to get the win with the 57 points shot.
I'll be back next year hoping for the hat trick!
IanP
We have a rising star in SA F-Class who goes by the name of Matt Roberts. Last year he won the F-Std (B) at the Queens and this year he placed second in F-Std (A).
I watched him shoot some fine scores in difficult conditions, out scoring the higher ballistic advantage of the F-Open boys more than once. He is talking about building a 7mm rifle and shooting F-Open.
I think he will be a force to be reckoned with in any of the F-Class categories and hope he comes over to F-Open and pushes us all to the next level.
Congrats Matt, on a very well shot second place in this years Queens!

Congratulations to all from me as well (Rob, Ed? and Ian). Plus all that chased so hard. Looks like you guys had a really good tussle down there.
On Ian's comments about rising stars (well done Matt). It appears F open is in for a bit of a revival over upcoming years. I don't mind a good yarn and have been wandering the ranks chatting away as I do. - There is a lot of talk amongst F standard guys thinking of swinging to f open as the FTR rules slowly come in. Some have expensive, very accurate (and heavy) rigs that will never make the FTR class. Others simply don't want to shoot off a bipod. Some do not wish to start again and would lose serious money doing so. On the plus most seem quite willing to switch to shoot F open. Some with a change of caliber but some not. Looks like this will balance out the classes a little better and raise the bar in F open as some excellent shooters come across and increase the number of potential winners. Not sure what it will do to the excellent quality of F standard shooting in Australia but I suspect it will still thrive.
Once again congratulations all

SA F Class Queens
Thanks all for the best wishes and congratulations.
I just came back from a 4 week holliday traveling through central Queensland, without firing a shot. Maybe that was the rest I needed that helped me in the Hunt (leadup).
The lead up weather looked very scary as Bruce said, very strong westerly winds and I managed to not drop a point. Yes I do have a wind switch, but it broke down , probably all the water getting into it and shorting it out.
The Queens weather was a different ball, bullet game as you can see from the scores right throught the score board from TR A to F Class.
There were very quick changes from 45 right, to nothing then left wind.
But it is the luck of the draw this year and I have come away with a new knowledge of this range and its quirky wind paterns.
Well done Ed, Rob and Ian and also to the Grand Winners, once again Rob and Ed.
Also congratulations to Matt Roberts and Mike Willmont that was a great effort, especially Mike with his first Queens shoot, it was definitely a great effort in such tricky conditions .
Cheers

Well, back home, shot out and shot up, but happy. Eight days of shooting, three of Match Rifle, which had the best weather of the whole time, then five days of F/S. As others have said, a great shoot, wonderfull company and world class shooters as well.
Congratulations to all the Champions and all who came close, looking at the scores on the way through, any slip was trouble. Congratulations to brother Rob, on his wins.
I would also like to congratulate Phil Bain on his win in the Match Rifle Championships and to be the first shooter to score a 20 shot possible on the Lower Light range, with a score of 100.8 at 1,100 metres.
