some might recall a john wayne movie where his son had a mannlicher rifle.
john wayne knew that this rifle would "shoot flat to 600"
this can only mean a point blank range of 600, where there is no need to aim high or low.
wish I had one of them back in the goat hunting days.
a recent viewing if streets of loredo revealed judge roy bean's fear of joey's rifle at a range of 1 mile. his fear was well founded as evidenced by the bullet hole that appeared in bean's newspaper while he was reading it.
the film claimed the rifle to be german, but it looked horribly like an early model swiss Schmidt rubin that had been sporterized and had the cocking handle altered or replaced by a more modern one.
the early schmidts fired a paper patched bullet propelled by semi smokeless at 1900.
this could be used for match rifle.
so why do we all overlook these good things.

You seem to have missed The Hunting Party, where they all toddled off with their Peabody Martinis equipped with 3/8" scopes & took out the naughty guys at Billy Dixon distances with the same degree of conviction.
