Bedding

Post by Brad Y »

Gents

Im in a little quandry at the moment with my 7mm barrel. I believe I have figured out (helped a little from a couple of people in the know) why its been copper fouling and not shooting.

Lets just say Im going away from the barrel block for now and have set the barrel up with a recoil lug, and the action set on a V block.

Now the pierce action isnt a member of the large tenon gang and its fairly short. With the recoil lug its better but Im still a little concerned that long term the 30 inch straight profile barrel will be a little heavy. Ive seen some rifles with these big barrels on trued rem's and this action I believe will have alot more strength than any remington.

What Im thinking about is bedding a 5-10mm section in front of the recoil lug. Hopefully not long enough to have effect on harmonics, but just to provide a little more support for the long heavy barrel. It will be ok for changing barrels as nothing else that I have is thicker than this barrel so they will either clear it or touch it the same.

I guess the question Im asking is has anyone done this before and does it work or am I playing with fire and should just leave it floating up to the recoil lug.

Hi Brad
I have a rifle with a full inch of bedding under the barrel and it shoots great.
In saying that I am not a believer in the whole tennon / barrel length thing so I would only try the barrel bedding if it does not shoot.

Give it a go an see what happens, you can always cut the bedding back out if it makes it shoot worse!!

Good luck!!! Hope you get it sorted

I had a shillen full bull savage barrel (1.05" cylinder) fitted and the gunsmith recommended 1" of bedding in front of the barrel nut. If it shoots I will leave it, if not it can be removed. It didn't cost any extra when I had the action pillar bedded so it is worth a try.
