You are right on the money Alan, I would add. If we compare a well made cut barrel to a well made cut barrel to poorly made buttoned barrels or vice versa we are not doing a fare comparison. But results will speak for them selfs.

My attitude to barrels is that you can be lucky or unlucky with any brand regardless of cut or button rifling. But brand is the most important indicator of the quality of the product i.e. with some brands you have a better chance of getting a good one. Its a pity we don't see more equipment lists in F-Class - particularly in the US where availability of all the brands is not so much of a problem. A quick look at the barrel brands of the leading shooters is worthwhile.

If you read down this link you will see that Bartleins and Krieger are about neck and neck. No surprises there, but, having said that, I have 'had'( ) a dud '2008' Krieger(well it has taken just on a thousand shots to tune this barrel for vertical, changing powder weight, projectiles, seating depth, etc. Now about right with a barrel tuner, adjusting during an extra third stage each week). This barrel actually shot brilliantly with both Berger's and Sierra's for the first 200 rounds, then went sour.

I did the rounds with some US friends in Raton last year and got pretty much the same story - Bartlein, Krieger and Brux in that order. Perhaps a few more BRUX in the F class world but all three brands were consistently in the winners circle. All three brands are cut rifle.

Have just purchased a 7mm Krieger 8.5 twist HV for a project so I shall hopefully have a winner there, fingers crossed

... I should add that I have a broughton 6.5mm barrel that is just fine as well ...

Well, what can I say? I thought Broughton (button rifled) for example were still very popular. I've only had one and it was better than most of the cut rifle barrels I had then. And there have been some hummer Maddcos and Archers in Australia. But those figures are hard to argue with.

I remain unconvinced that button rifled barrels put you at a disadvantage. If there is an advantage to cut rifled, its because most of the current best brands happen to be using that technique. They are probably also using very good steel, and are working to very high standards in all parts of the manufacturing process.

Okay, how about we look at all Queens winning F-Class barrels for the last 3 years. Here it is starting with a few that I know filled in. If you know any of them, either yours or someone else's post here or by PM. I'll keep updating it in this post. If we get a good response , this will be an interesting exercise. Note that the first NSW Queens held in calendar 2012 was the rescheduled 2011 event. Just squeezed that it in to show that I have had success with a button rifled barrel!

I like my equipment lists with a good dose of salt.

Quality target barrels are always in short supply and those with a good personal supply seem to have hoarded them in the cellar along with their semillon for 2-4yrs. The barrels we see winning this year might well be from a 2011 manufacture date?

The better shooters will buy the quality barrels when they are available and use them to shoot and win. They will also use what they have at the time to shoot and win. So if brand X comes in, that is what they buy because the way things are at the moment they don't know when brand Y will be available again. If brand Y comes in again they will see if they are still shooting well and either hold or sell brand X depending on the result.

Not saying lists aren't useful, but there are a lot of other factors that cause a list to trend one way or another this year and the next. Imagine if there was a world-wide lens shortage from Zeiss for 2-3yrs, would we still see the same brands in the scope list?

Team Sinclair uses our barrels as well as the whole Michigan F-TR team which is hosted by Bryan Litz as well as other teams. Also all of the shooters on Team Berger shoot our barrels and Shiraz and all or most of the shooters on Team Grizzly.

Also at the recent U.S. Nationals last week or so Derek Rodger set a new record and broke it a few days later. He shot a 200-11x at a 1k yards and a few days later broke it with a 200-12x. Also in the same match Dan Pohlabel set a senior class record with a 200-9x.

Yes I wish they would do equipment lists for F-Class as well as some other types of competitions.

At the Sept. 2014 Benchrest championships Gene Bukys set 4 or 6 new national records. Cannot remember which but he brought the 6 trophy plaques with him and we have them at the shop. We have a picture with him and the shop crew on our home page.
