.308 to .260

Has any of you necked down Lapua .308 brass to .260? I have quite a few .308 and some Palma brass but not many .260. When you neck down do you need to neck turn or ream the neck? If it involves too much I'll just buy more .260 brass.

It is not a good plan to neck 308 to 260, the neck will be too short.

It can work, however you will probably have to turn depending on your 260 chamber nk diameter and your neck will be shorter by around 20-30 thou IIRC.

Yes it will work, but there are technical reasons why it should not be done, these reasons are not safety related however. Bear in mind .260 cases are longer than .308 cases & when you neck .308 down to .260 you lose more case length.Keith H.

I necked down once fired winchester 308 brass and then measured the length and it was only about .010" shorter and I am getting great groups plus good case life, I did buy some norma 260 brass and couldn't find much of a difference in accuracy, but at least I didn't have to fireform brass, yes I do tend to get small dents in the shoulder when necking down the brass, which is the only drawback. but I can live with that as $150 plus for 260rem brass is a ripoff......

forgot to mention that I run a chamber with a .295 neck as my sized brass with a seated projectile measures out at .292 so I don't have to neck turn my brass, also norma brass with a seated projectile measures out at .290,,,bugger if I know why the standard reamers have a .298 neck ,,,,yes I do it's for safety also lapua brass is thicker, but the .295 neck works for me

Thanks John for the PM explaining that your Lapua 260 brass has a .295 neck that explains why the reamer suppliers grind them to .298

Hi I run a 260 rem with great results when 260 bras was hard to get I necked up lapua 243 brass with good results , some loaded up to 12 times
