223 throating/projectile advice needed

Post by BD28 »

Hey guys,

Getting a 223 built for F standard will be shooting 80 grain bergers.

I am yet to decide on the 80gr VLD or 80gr Hybrid as the projectile of choice.

Does anyone have any advice either way between the two? Obviously the throating length for the VLD will be slightly shorter than the hybrid, so would it be best practice to throat short and seat the hybrids further in should i go down that path? or just settle on one or the other?

BD I think most Berger users with 223's use the 80.5 fullbore projectile at present but there is a new 85.5 on the way which looks very promising. If I were making a 223 now I would be looking seriously at setting it up for for that one. Regards Malcolm.

Thanks Mal,

Will the 85.5 be immediately accepted for f std?

Any idea how far away it is?

BD I am fairly sure that we can now use any projectile up to 91gns in standard and TR but I just can't find the update on the NRAA site. It was there a month or two ago. Perhaps someone smarter than me on a computer can post a link.Regards Malcolm.

Appendix 1 page 125 of the SSR’s

to paraphrase, in TR and FStd 223 Remington can use any projectile up to a maximum weight of 91 grains.

I wonder what some good alternative projectiles would be other than the Bergers which at times have availability issues.

88gr ELD Match
90gr A-tip
85gr Nosler RFD

some good options out there!
