BORE SCOPES

Anything new out there in the way of bore scopes ???? i have been on the hunt but the Hawkeye still seems the best value, So Far ?, Chop.

I picked up a secondhand medical device that resembles a Hawkeye. Made in Germany, cost me $15. The down side is the diameter is for 7mm barrels and above. Came across it on eBay. I try not to think what it was used for in the past.

It's probably OK. My ear, nose & throat specialist has one he uses for sneaking up sinuses.

Hey Chopper,

For the purpose of inspecting the bores in rifle barrels, the Hawkeye really cant be beat, for the money...........

You could pay a shipload more, with no real benefit, or pay less and take your chances..........

My opinion only, but I've been using borescopes for over 30 years.

Cameron. I also had an ex proctologists bore scope. When I first used it I thought no wonder my gun wont shoot, the bore looks like Sh?t, but then I gave the lense a wipe and the bore looked good again.

I did do a trial at work a few days ago between 2 borescopes, one was about $30000, the cheapy was $4000, but both no good for rifle barrels.
Gotta say though, the Hawkeye borescope does the job its intended to do.

I must concur with Dazza, we both work together (he's cost me a lot in rifles these last 15yrs!)........and some shooting humiliation. thanks mate :wink:

Dazza has a whole career of experience with boroscopes and if anyone knows the value of a boroscope it would be him. With the aussie $ around parity, affordability doesn't get ANY better than this. Parity = a once in a life time opportunity for shooters.

I've got a hawkeye and it is invaluable for KNOWING the barrel is clean, so it it shoots, keep going. Plus it saves a lot of cleaning time and as a consequence reduces cleaning rod damage to bore. It cant tell you if it is worn out but you can see obvious damage and fouling and if the clean bore wont shoot, its either the load or time for a new barrel.

If the boroscope helps to keep you barrels clean, then scores should improve and help those barrels last that little bit longer..........and if the cost is an issue, getting 200-400 more shots out of your barrels will pay for it in the average shooting career.

Have to agree with the "know it is clean" by using a borescope. Also useful for knowing a chamber looks good while the barrel is still in the lathe, checking crown is nice and sharp from the inside, and the most common thing is to keep an eye on the throat area in the barrel.
