Barnard, RPA, which action

Post by bolster55 »

Hello all,
Which would be the best, or better, action to use in building an F class rifle? What barrel and length, calibre and twist?

Cheers

Hi
More info required, FS or FO ??? If FO I would go for the Barnard simply because of the trigger, it very hard to get a RPA down to a very light pull weight. I've had both and both are very good.

I'm probably biased because I shoot 1000 yard benchrest as well, but my vote would go to the Barnard. Those four luggers take just too much cocking effort & move about on the bipod or in the bags far too much while you're doing it to be the best accuracy option - and that's coming from somebody who loves his Millennium actions.

Come on John, when are you going to buy a 2 lug?

For shooting off bags I like the 2 luggers. Bat and Stiller I like. Nice and smooth to cycle.

Barnard PL
BAT MB
Lawton 7500
Stl Viper SS
Stolle F-Class
Surgeon
Any one of these would do the job

Good info here

Cameron,

The ask was between Barnard & RPA. If I had an open choice it would be any right bolt left port double lugger - probaba Stiller or Stolle, seeing that's what Gilsie peddles.

Hi John

I have settled with a Barnard Model P action and have just rebarreled it with a 1.25" cylinder profile Krieger barrel for F Class Open.
I am more than happy with it, so much so that I have another one on order with the same profile and make barrel but a diferent caliber.
I had a ex bench rest shooter go through the trigger group and it is now set at a consistent and safe 4 ounces.
My opinion , go with the Barnard.

Cheers
Paul

Now using a BARNARD P action and trigger on my FO rifle. The trigger pull weight has been modified to approx. 10 ozs.
I'm more than happy with it.

Two possibles were shot at MBRC OPM yesterday at 600 meters, both rifles were built on Barnard actions.
The first rifle was a 284, mine is a 300WSM.
Go the Barnard.

Cheers

Paul are you suggesting only Barnards could have shot possibles :P ...I hear the conditions were exceptional by normal Murray Bridge standards but yes it was well done.

Hi LYNN

I'm just a sprooker for Barnard actions.
Trevor did very well as usual with his Omark, 6mm. He shot a very impresive 98 at the same range.
There were a few light but tricky wind changes which jumbled up the scores throughout the day, and I think Glen and myself were lucky to get one of those calm, almost no wind situations which enabled us to shoot the possibles.
I see you will be gracing the mounds Lynn , hopefully soon.

Cheers

Hi Ian
I must apologise for not mentioning your generosity for lending me your Barnard actioned 6.5x47L .
Without your generosity I would not have been able to compete in the "shoot off" for the position of first place at the MBRC OPM.

Thank you Ian.

Cheers

Well actually Rod, most of the East Coast is closer (as the jet flies) to where the Barnards are made than to where a certain Australian action is made :D . But seriously, all it will take is for an Inch to win a Queens in F-Class and if it stays around the current price level, it will get some of the market. Do you know of anyone building an F-Open rifle on it yet?

Alan
