Scope selection
I have recently acquired another F open rig in 6 Dasher, and it has come time to throw a scope onto it. I have broken it down to two choices the Nightforce Comp 15-55 with FCR reticle.......or the Sightron SIII 10-50 with the LRMOA reticle.
Having used Nightforce comps before I know how good they are, but are they worth the extra 1K+?

Re: Scope selection
I would love to hear why the nf is regarded better?
A one word answer certainly leaves a lot to the imagination.
I have owned 3 sightrons s3's two 8-32 and currently a 10-50.
All my sightrons have tracked perfectly.
The glass has been good and I like the 1/8th target dot reticle.
I regard them a inexpensive reliable work horse.
I'm not suggesting the sightron is supperior.
I'm not suggesting it is inferior.
I regard the sightron s3 and nf benchrest as equals.
I actually prefer the sightron for a few reasons.
As for the sightron vs the Nf Comp.....
I can't comment with any conviction.
I would love to see what the extra $1000 gets you

Re: Scope selection
I have just picked up my new gen 2 fcr rectile nightforce scope today and mounted it on my rifle . Have bitten the bullet ( pardon the pun!) and paid the extra money for the NF over the Sightron ! Sightron looked really good too and maybe ok for a shorter range rifle such as a dasher.
But I'm really happy with my choice. The gen 2 turents are so much better than the 2013 NF Comp so many times I was 5 Moa out ! So 10 Moa will be good and shouldn't get so lost !
If you can afford a NF buy it ! It's good value for money when compared with more expensive scopes ! Looking forward to the next Opm and trying it out! Can also give the scope I've been borrowing back too, yeh ha!

Yes there's no doubt the comps are good I actually own one Gen2 it sit's on top of my 284, I might have to sit behind a couple of these 10-50 Sightrons before I hand over the hard earned once again....I know Alan is now using a NF comp, maybe some others have changed from the Sightrons to the NF's? I let it stew for a week or so and chat to a few Sightron guys hopefully this weekend.
Cheers

Re: Scope selection
Antony,
As you know, I have both, and I definitely prefer to use the NF Comp over the Sightron 10-50. Why? Because the optics are better, the clicks feel more precise, the focussing knob is easier to turn, and the scope is lighter, particularly if you use front lens shades. But, the Sightron is a good scope with no faults or weaknesses that really matter. For some, the more "polished" performance of the Comp may result in an occasional better score, but I wouldn't rely on that. Whether its worth the extra $1000 for a Comp depends mostly on your budget. If you don't need the $1000 for something else, then a Comp is a very good way for an F-Class shooter to spoil himself
.
See you Saturday (at Yarram).

Re: Scope selection
Aren't the comps more like 1500-1800 extra?
I also have both, the sightron is great, the biggest issue I have with it is setting the parallax. Q
Given the choice I would have a NF any day, but the sightron is a formidable scope given its price.

Re: Scope selection
Yes it looks like i need to have a better look at the Sightron. Right now I am leaning heavy on another comp. Has anyone looked at the Khales k1050? 100 extra over the comp.
Will see you at Yarram Alan. Finally worked a load out for the 284 using 2213 with an SD of 2.8 hopefully it prints as good as it looks.

+1 on the above, I'm using a 10-50x now, and shoot beside others with NF. I bought the Sightron on here. for me, I'm more then happy with it, its a great scope for the money. However i sit next to several new NF Comp's and there glass is far supierior, whether or not its worth the extra cost, thats upto the end user. After looking through telephoto lens everyday for work for the last 25 years, you can seen differences in contrast/coatings and image quality straight away. that said i'm happy with the 10-50x if i had the money i'd have a new NF Comp

Re: Scope selection
Anthony,
I have both the NF Comp 2nd Gen and 10-50x60 Sightron. Alan's comments are spot on.
I tend to use the Sightron as a backup scope or on club days. The look and feel of the turrets on the NF Comp are streets ahead.
FYI, I used the NF Comp at the weekend on full power at 500 yards, and apart from the gun smoke drifting around at Grantville I could see the target clearly. Hence the score.

Re: Scope selection
Hi everyone,
We are agents for all the brands of scopes and personally have (or have had) all of the above (and more inc March, S&B etc)) in the kit bag. We also have extensive testing equipment including collimators and recoil simulating equipment plus resolution charts and colour charts etc. We have tested all of the scopes extensively and have nothing to gain from pushing one brand more than another.
The NF comp scope is currently outselling everything else on the market (combined) 2:1 and with good reason. The optics are up there with Swarovski quality. Quite honestly once you use one on the line for while it is hard to use anything else. The detail you can see in mirage is outstanding and quite frankly unbeatable. This shows in the optical quality testing (charts and resolution) as well. They are also very lightweight and can help with FTR outfits. The adjustments are firm and precise. All measurements we have conducted on the collimator and recoil testing have shown no errors even under recoil and other possible issues that are hard to test for. The only downside to me is the reticle choice for us that like a slightly course minute reticle for holdoffs (Like the March or Peter Smiths Home Made ones) but for those with good eyesight the Fine FCR1 reticle is ok and of course no issue with the crosshair or dot or Double dot reticle. Our score on internal reviews is 5 star or 9.5/10
Next down the list should still be the NFBR. It is a very solid rifle scope with optics far superior to the Sightron and a long earned reputation for long range records etc. More records have been set on BR scopes than any other. A reliable workhorse. On the negative for me is the front focus and 6 minute turrets and weight but these might not be a negative for everyone. (4.5 star 8.5/10)
Then the Sightron (I currently have 1 as a backup scope too). A reliable scope that is probably the bottom of the range that should be considered for serious F class. If your budget only goes to this or a second scope then it is a reasonable choice but the NFBR is very close on Pricing and should also be considered. The low points for me are the optical quality (was OK when I didn't know the difference but I get better scores with the NF due to better detail in the mirage). and not much feel to the clicks. A good reliable backup. The price of these has gone up significantly with the dollar and on same margins there is not much difference to the BR which NF have held prices better than most. The sightrons were big movers a few years ago but things have changed. (3.5 star 7/10)
All are reasonable choices and budget driven - you get what you pay for in these 3.
