308 barrel twist rate

Post by JustinKLP »

I’m thinking of purchasing a Howa 1500 barrelled action as an entry into F/TR. Howa offer a 308 with a 26” barrel, however the twist rate is 1:8”. Is this going to be too fast for 155 grain projectiles? I don’t want to be “forced” into dealing with the extra recoil of 200+ grainers just to suit the barrel.

not sure who told you that it has a 1/8 twist but look at OSA's web page listing the twist, it say's 1/10 also there's probably more experienced shooters here, but I have been using a 1/10 for about 30 years out to 800m with great results using either 155's or 168 grn pills

I have a 1/9 and it shoots 155s fine. 1/8 would be very unusual unless its a 300 blackout or a 308 designed to shoot subsonic 200gr projectiles....

My mistake, it appears the Howa 308 does come in a 1/10. Not sure how I got that wrong.

Good to know a 1/10 will be suitable for 155’s.

1:10 works fine from 155-200’s, some 210’s.... good twist to start with.
