This was on the front page of the paper yesterday. Not great exposure for our sport considering how one sided the article was, although im not sure shooting in schools is the best idea anyway..

Like to here you fellas thoughts.

Quite a number of schools, both private and public, in our area have students that participate in various shooting sports. I think it is fantastic that they are able to. What other sports require such strict discipline? Muck up and you don't get to join in.
Shooting sports have one of the lowest rates of injury.

Apart from which, as all the dissemblers who've tossed in their bob's worth in the article well know:

(1) In Queensland, persons between 11 & 18 can only use a firearm whilst in the company of a licensed shooter; they cannot posses one.

(2) Rifle Ranges are subject to the approval of Qld Police Weapons Licensing branch in accordance with specific guidelines & it's highly unlikely that anything other than an air firearm range would be approved in a school. Essentially, the sport will be performed off campus.

(3) Military cadets in Queensland already operate in the manner suggested.

Shooting is a science and a discipline.

kids can learn so much from shooting:

how RH%, wind, air temperature & angle of protection can help determine the point of impact.

RH%: the heavier the air or higher rh% content the more friction on the projectile thus influencing trajectory as velocity drops.

wind: wind swirling of the mounds and in between trees, off shore winds, all have different affects and push and pull on projectiles.

temperature: the higher the temp pushes air practicals apart,(less friction) thus allowing projectiles to drift further on a warm dry day, and drop faster on a cold wet day. there is also the factor of atmospheric pressure but I will not go in to that for now.

Angle: the combination of the above plus others including projectile design, burn rate of powder, and other fun stuff. the angle of projection can be determined. some times the grater the angle the grater the distance and so on.

So shooter are actually Ballistics scientists as most shooters invest time and money developing a load for there rifle. Plus at the line you are making adjustments to counter for the elements to hit a desired point on a target at up to 1000m is an achievement in it self given all the variables.

the above can also be applied to other areas in life. such as building design, boat design, car design, so on.

so to the smart arse that assumes target shooting is a wast of time and a dangerous activity and kids will learn nothing think again.

we can re brand the sport and have it called, the association of Ballistics armature scientists. and Sunday called field testing days.

other wise just cut the crap and call it Ballistics (the science of mechanics that deals with the flight, behaviour, and effects of projectiles)

Bad news is we are surrounded! good news we can shoot in any direction!!!!
