gaintwist barrels

Post by bruce moulds »

was just reading that tests done by north American fclass shooter glenn taylor indicate that gaintwist and std twist barrels present similar accuracy potential.
he goes through 2 barrels per year, not sure what calibre or chambering.
what he did find in the comparison was that the gaintwists seem to last 10% - 15% longer than straight twists, as the throats erode more slowly.
it would be interesting to know the starting rate of twist in his test barrels.
possibly due to peak pressure being later hence less temperature in the throat . I surmise.
mileage on this in years to come will be interesting.
I have a 40 cal gaintwist which goes from 1:26 to 1:13, and it shoots cast bullets very well, being capable of holding vbull vert at all ranges. it will never get throat erosion though, as it is only used with black powder.
keep safe,
bruce.
