I have got the info I needed from Dave at PT&G and I have ordered a 223R reamer with .085" free bore. This should allow more room for powder and have only the boat tail sitting down thru the neck into the shoulder of the case.

The PT&G Match reamer which is probably similar/same dimensions as most of us have been using with the Sierra MKs has .068" free bore. The Hornady Amax needs .017" longer than the MKs for optimum use of the case.

Price

Post by littlebang556 »

Price may play a small part with some shooters as to their choice.
Whilst I can understand that our AU$ was far from parity when the decision was made to increase the price of Sierra projectiles I find it hard to believe that no more have been imported since then with better conversion rates thus enabling a small saving.
As things are, it must cost around 25 cents to get each projectile into the country and distributed. This alone could almost equate to "an unfair advantage" when the scenario is viewed alongside .308 options.
With massive increases coupled with many option and dimensional changes it is no wonder those new to the sport are left scratching their heads or moved on to some other sport.
I am all for change but please dont frighten me by doing it all at once.
We are in danger of heading in the direction of the person with the most money to throw at equipment will need the largest trophy room.......not the best way to get new members IMHO.

Yes I can shoot other disciplines all day (true only at a max of 500) using 10 cent projectiles(alll up less than 25 cents a shot) and be competitive. This is one of the reasons I haven't been doing much at the range lately.
I will come back to it one day I am sure but am enjoying it too much at the moment, fairly scary though when you realise there have been quite a few ex "bellyfloppers" turning up lately.

Price

as much as we dont like to admit it, ecconomics do play a large part in our sport...be it the choice of projectile, calibre or even the amount of trips we make to other ranges and ultimately our equipment.
There are many thing I could otherwise be spending my money on but none would satisfy me more than rifle shooting.
As for your option shooting cheaper projectiles at shorter ranges...well there is much merrit in such a choice but for me I look for a load that will do all ranges to keep the system of reloading simple whilst reducing the risk of taking the wrong load to the range....murphy's law follows me everywhere.

Cheers

I went out bush this morning as it was nice and still and shot five groups of 5 each for AMAX and Sierra in various loadings. The sierra's are consistantly better grouping in my rifle than the AMAX's. I think the reason behind it all is the rifle was originally chambered for 80 grain sierras, so I will use these (I have just bought some old stock) until around 1500 rounds then will re-chamber to Amax specs. Pity about the Sierras being so dear but that may change one day I hope.

It doesn't seem to care what shitty old hunting pill I use they are all consistant but never quite as good as the target ones.

I,m in the middle of screwing a Tikka 8" twist barrel onto my Rem 700 (currently in 17Rem) to shoot 80gn Sierras. What sort of velocities do you get with a 223 and 80gn pills? My barrel is 26", but what speeds are the 30" barrels getting?

I'm getting 2960fps with the 80gr Amax in a 30" barrel. The load I'm using is 25.7gr of 2208 in a long throated chamber for these VLD type bullets. Accuracy is laser like!
