75 AMAX

What loads are people running in their .223's with 75 Amax pills. My rifle has a 26" barrel.
If sighted in for say 300m what would I need to come up for 600m?

G'Day John,
my rem700 with a 26" truflite barrel and lapua cases used a load of 25.0gns 2208, with moly coated 75gn amax's set 0.010" into the rifling lands. with CCI450 primers.

If you are usung uncoated bullets you will find the load needs to be 0.5gn lower due to the higher friction = more pressure.

I've found that several .223Rem's I know of seem to work well around the 25gn mark with 2208 but as usual, please start with lower loads and work up to find what load combo is safe in YOUR rifle.

With the 75amax's (estimated MV = 2850fps) I needed the following come ups:
300yds = zero
500yds = 6.0moa
600yds = 9.5moa

In my Savage 223 I was using 24.0 2208 for the 75's

300m to 400m: 2.9 MOA
400m to 500m: 3.3 MOA
500m to 600m: 3.8 MOA

Thanks for the info. I pulled one of the rounds I was using a few years ago and the powder weight was 25.2 grains with Winchester cases and rifle primers. With this load I had a few pierced primers every now and then. Bolt lift was OK. Only have a few of these left and have been using 69 grainers since. I now have some Remington 7.5 and CCI BR4 primers to try, are these OK or is there something better?. I'll load some up from 24 to 25 grains and try them.
The range I can load test on only goes to 500m.

The CCI br4 and the Rem 7 1/2 both have thicker and harder cups than the average small rifle primer. The CCI 450 magnum primer also doesn't suffer from the pierced cup problem that some people seem to have with high pressure loads. Also even though the 75 gn Amax is a very good projectile I don't think it has ever been made legal for "F" class standard. It is only the 80gn Amax that can be used unless you are shooting Open class.

yes, I only ever shot my 223 with 75 amax's in F open because I preferred a much lighter trigger, you will need to look at 80gn AMax, 80gn Nosler or 80gn Sierras.

No problems Ned, I new that they weren't legal for FS. For the life of me I can't fathom why they aren't. If trying to promote FS I would think that you should be able to use any weight up to say 80 grains. This wouldn't restrict the punter from using a factory rifle with a 1- 9 twist barrel from being able to compete at the longs. It would be nice to be able to use 77 Lapua/SMK's as well. I'll load some up tomorrow and see how they go.

They should be legal if only for the fact that they might work in some peoples 1 in 9" barrels when the 80's won't. That would open it up for more people to take part with what they already have so that they can get well and truly hooked like the rest of us.

Edit: To make them legal puts an expectation on the NRAA and the state associations to supply them which I expect is the most significant deterrent.
