order of operations--- clarification please

Post by ogre6br »

What are the order of operations for a case that needs neck turning?

What order do you perform the case prpe operations?
I'm necking up 6BR to 30 BR using a Redding tapered expander in one pass using a big O frame press. Heres the problem I am getting necks that have a diff in length from one side of the neck to the other.- so when they are on the turner mandrel it looks like the necks are wobbling all over the place. It looks really odd- but is it OK???

I need to skim the shoulder bulge/donut off the neck and get it down to a .331-3315 neck for a .334 chamber.
As best as I can measure the necks are turning up parallel but look odd.

Should I case trim to length before neck turning or after??

Please someone clarify the order of operations for case prep?!??

There will only be one turning operation as I only need to skim off the donut and about 2 thou of neck to get to .331-3315.

is it ok if the neck isn't fully turned for the whole circumferance if it's on the size I want?? Does the surface finish of the unturned brass make any differance in chamber/neck tension and grip on the inside of the chamber when fired?
leading to oddly formed brass or some safety issue??

I am using the Forester hand turner (the small u shaped unit) with the carbide cutter modified to have a 30 degree angle on it so it will follow the case shoulder. I stop when the case shoulder gets the mearest smallest skim of a turn- this was done so I don't dig into the shoulder/neck join.

G'day Pat,
mate track down your copy of precision Shooting BR primer as you will get the full Dick Wright (Precision Shooting) article on case prep (usually in 100 or 200 case batches). But in summary he does it this way with some editorial on my behalf for the 30BR......
(DW uses a K&M turner and this is also reflected in the steps below)

1. Inspect cases for defects such as off centre flash holes, deformed necks etc. and cull

2. weigh and sort and batch to 0.1gns

3. Uniform primer pockets

4. de-burr flash holes

5. expand to 30 cal

6. FLS with 30BR FLS die (straightens necks to give uniform & even finish at neck shoulder junction.

7. Expand again with 30 cal expander made by your neck turner manufacturer. You cannot swap expanders from maker to maker as they are sized to suit their neck turner mandrels

8. Cut to a uniform length & set up turner on culled cases

9. Turn necks to suit chamber/bullet

10. Fireform

Basically that is a standard approach to achieve good uniform cases. I've used it for the 6ppc and it works.

Again find the book or get a copy of Precision shooting Reloading Guide as it has a full chapter on case prep for Br as well chapter covering High Power (FB; US style gas & Bolt guns), varminting, black powder etc etc.

Hope this helps

Thanks Ned
Lover boy TrevorT has my BR primer and he's a little busy these days.

A standard FLS die or a type S FLS die?? could I used the expander to straighten out the necks if I dont have a Standard type FLS die??

Thanks
later

G'Day Pat,
a std FLS dies would be preferred to give proper neck straightening, but if you have a bushing FLS die then you will have to size it smaller (say 5 thou or so)so the neck turning expander can open it up slightly to suit the neck turners mandrel.

You cannot properly straighten a neck with an expander only with a FLS die

Case Preparation Procedures

The following site has quite a good article about "Preparing Cases for Longe Range Accuracy" Its taken from Precision Shooting Magazine and might be of some help.
