6.6-284

Post by cheech »

Hi all,

Interested in 6.5-284 , what would be good powder for heavy pills and 30” plus barrels , keeping in mind better throat/barrel life , would 2217 , reloaded 26 be an option ?

Any knowledge appreciated
Cheers

I don't think it will matter much, barrel life in any caliber with high bore gas volumes such as 6.5-284 have rather short barrel life. Target accuracy barrel life in these chamberings run around 1200 to 1600 rounds on average, there will be and are exceptions to every rule of course. Powder choice is unlikely to change barrel life any more than 10%, barrel life of any caliber can vary this much from barrel to barrel.

I was using Adam's at Loxton on Saturday. You should give him a buzz. The thing is a tack driver.

51gn of 2213sc and 46gn of 2209 were the loads for mine.
Shooting Berger 140 vlds
50.5 of 2217 worked but I never used it.

I'm finding the 6.5 Super LR does everything the 6.5x284 did unless you're aiming for 3200fps.
1400 rounds at 3050 and still going.

I've heard Vihtavuori powder might be available again soon. If that happens N165 is one of the coolest burning powders out there. I used it exclusively for the last few years of my 6.5-284 shooting, up to about 54gn with 142SMKs for velocities approaching 3000fps and barrel life about 1200-1500. New projectiles from Berger (153.5gn) and Sierra (150gn) look promising for the 6.5-284.

I hope you're not just teasing Alan. I'd love to see Vhitavuori back in Aus. Might give the 230s another go. :D
