Berger Ballistics Trojan?
Has anyone else had a problem with the Berger Ballistics program carrying a trojan (computer infection)? My McAfee anti-virus software will not have a bar of it - says it has the "Artemus.." trojan. If someone else can confirm, I'll contact Berger.

Alan, I just downloaded it and tested for virus with a negative result. Its all good as far as I can tell. I'm using German technology to test for viruses etc maybe you should change to Avira AntiVir.
Get the free version here: http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus
This program always comes out at the top of anti virus test comparisons.

Thanks Ian, but all that says is that your software didn't detect it. Mine didn't either until today. I've been using the program BergerBallistics(11).exe for over a year with no problem. Suddenly it was gone from its folder and when I download it again, it only lasts a few seconds and is deleted by McAfee

I might ask Berger if they've had other reports.

Alan, why not submit it to McAfee, its part of the service you pay for and dont be surprised if its a false positive!

Probably won't do that - many hoops to jump through and my request to McAfee still didn't work

Hi Alan
Unfortunately all anti-viruses have a certain probability of missing the malware, trojans or viruses. All anti-viruses also have the probability of false identifying harmless software as malicious because of a piece of code match to the signature in database or s/w uses methods similar to viruses.
Eventually the user’s decision should be based on trust in the software source. I can recommend the website which also may help you making the decision
http://www.virscan.org/
If antivirus reports you the problematic executable (.exe) or .dll or some other files, you may submit (upload) it to the website. The site will check the file with almost all known anti-viruses and give you a report for each antivirus.
Based on this report you can make a decision. I would say, if more than 5 antiviruses reported a threat then you should be alarmed.

Thanks Dmitri. I do think its a false alarm. McAfee hasn't identified a trojan - just suspects it. And I'm inclined to trust the source. The fact that I've been running it for 12 months with no problems says something. I found a very knowledgable post on a McAfee user forum, saying that there's a fix for by-passing false alarms, which is currently in beta, so I'll wait for that. I used to be into computers, spent 10 years in PC support, but have retired and would far rather spend my time solving shooting problems

To all,
Just to update you on this - I contacted Bryan Litz and he kindly sent me the .jar version (the download is a .exe), which has no problem under McAfee. After talking to him I am now quite sure it was a false positive. If anyone has a similar problem with Berger Ballistics and McAfee anti-virus software, I think it'll be okay for me to pass on the .jar version.
