How much barrel can be hung off a Rem 700 action?

Post by RDavies »

I have a Rem 700 in 17 Rem which is not getting used much. I am thinking of putting a 223 barrel on to have a go in F/TR. how big a barrel have people put on their Rem 700 short actions with good results? I have seen one person have really bad results with a big heavy F Open barrel on his standard Rem action until he got a lighter one, but for F/TR, I don't need anything TOOO heavy.
Will a 30" heavy Palma work with a standard action?

Rod a heavy palma should be ok on a REM 700 action provided it is bedded properly with pillars!! I don"t like V blocks for the 700 as actions can vary in size and straightness so it can be a gamble !! I have a standard Palma profile for my own 223 and it shoots great , i never seen the real need to go much bigger but i would expect heavy Palma would be smack on the button of being perfect weight !! The extra weight will also help TAME the Recoil

Hi Rod
I have a 30" Palma plus Tuner on my XR100.
This a shorter than SA mod 700 but is a single shot which is quite a bit stiffer than a mag cut out model.
It shoots extremely well - couple of 300M possibles on the old Open target!
Cheers

Nothing wrong with a HV on a rem.

My LH rem works well on a V block but I half suspect the LH rems arent a common item from the factory and might be a little better in terms of striaght/roundness- but when it goes into the new stock it will go into a v block then also skim bedded to fit the action properly.

The only thing you will be up for Rod is getting the action trued up, firing pin hole bushed, probably a new trigger if its still a factory one...

Good point Brad
We had to bush the bolt face to a smaller firing pin to stop pierced primers!

I'm a step ahead. I already had the firing pin bushed due to severe erosion on the bolt face when I bought it. Other than that, it is standard.

Rod, no problems with HV contour in repeater R700 rifles. I have Heavy Palma on one aswell in 308 and no issues. I would just run a heavy palma 223 30" barrel and go from there. No need for the HV stuff :)

Hi there , can only give you what has worked for me .
28" HV Lilya 3 grove fluted . So there isn't as much weight hanging of a hunting rifle action ! Eg mag fed . My rifle is a little over 7 kg.
Cheers GS .

Hi Rod
Les at Nowra has put up to 34" 1.25 to 1.00 profiles on Rem 700's however most were barrel clamped, we have 2 x 30" 1.25" to 1" on Rem 700's in Wild Dog Tac stocks that are shooting just fine.

OK, so it seems I can hopefully still get away with putting a decent sized barrel on it. In reality I will likely put a re chambered barrel around 28" on it when a used one becomes available.

Yes, it is a tack holer, which is why I wanted to keep it as a switch barrel 17Rem and 223.
