However, I'd like to think the shift away from Krieger may have been a consequence of lead time to customer. I'm still waiting for my Krieger barrel some 9 months down the track, and supposedly their manufacturing times have improved.
Another item of note is that the barrel length tended to favor the shorter 26", however our F Classes in Australia typically run anywhere between 28" to 32". So I'm wondering if we are not suffering from the Bigger is Better approach to our shooting here in OZ?
Your PRS series goes out to 1200 yards, so I'm curious how they get there (speed wise) when only using 26" barrels?

They push their cartridges harder then we would and they mainly use hot 6mm and 6.5mm which can get the MV easier from shorter barrels but I can get same MV from my 26" 308 barrel as guys get with 30" barrels if I load it right. Not much difference really. Many use the 105gr hybrids in 6mm for the BC. Would help a ton at the longs.

Defiance Actions, love their work. I have the rebranded Templar Action from GAP Rifles.
The Precision Rifle Series looks like a lot of fun. Do you shoot any of that Frank, or do you stick to mainly F Class?

My impression of tactical comps is that you need ruggedness but keeping weight down is important. That would be why they stick to 6 and 6.5 ammo and short (by F-Class standards) barrels. And the actions I believe are designed for good tolerance of dirt and water. Scope reticules and specs are also specialised. Not sure what sort of accuracy they need, but good cold barrel shots would be important.

To try and answer several questions the best I can and not quoting each individual (take no offense please) bear with me.....
Bartman007.....wasn't trying to be convenient and using it as a plug for us etc...it was mentioned in a post on a different thread about a week or so ago about not really having a equipment list for F-Class here in the States and what shooters are using etc....I tried to reply to the thread with who I know uses our barrels and records set etc...to give an idea to everyone what was being used. I want to say I also made a comment about the tactical rifle matches as well.
The tactical rifle matches are probably the fastest growing hi power rifle sport over here for the last several years. Several of the PRS matches the last few years were full up. Some of them they limit the amount of shooters to say around 80-120 shooters but some have the capacity for around 200 or more and every match I can think of fill up almost right away and there is a waiting list to get on a match most of the time. The shooters come from different back grounds. I know of a few F-Class shooters that only shoot these matches now. You have civilian shooters, law enforcement shooters, current serving military people as well. The military shooters include current serving snipers and sniper instructors as well as general military etc....
You show up with a .308 win gun at one of these matches and no matter what you pretty much won't win. It's very rare for a .308win. shooter to win one of these matches. Why? For one reason it's a timed event. When you run to the next stage and on the spot you have to make a wind call, adjustments to your scope (or use your mil dots for your corrections) and get your rounds off as quickly and as precisely as you can. The 6mms and 6.5mm calibers drift wise are a lot less than a .308win. So they have an advantage with those calibers.
All of the guns are mostly short actions and repeaters using a detachable box magazine. Usually a AI type mag. Here is a picture of one of my guns. It's in 6 Creedmoor, Badger M2008 action. Finish length on the barrel is 23" and I'm running 105gr. bullets at 3000fps. (2997fps avg. to be exact). The barrel contour is a modified Rem. Varmint with a .875" muzzle and +1.5" on the breech length.
Next picture is of Tracy's and Jeff's rifles. They had two identically built rifles by Mark Gordon at Short Action Customs. The action is a Defiance. Caliber is 6.5 Creedmoor. Barrel finish length is like 22.5" or so (not including the Surefire brake/suppressor attachment).
Craig, Right now time permitting I only shoot F-Class but in saying that I will take my tactical rifles to a F-Class match as well. There is a local range that host a F-class match once or twice a month that we try and get to during the summer time. I want to get back into shooting some small bore rifle as well during the winter time. Putting another .22rf rifle together right now. Almost got it done. Did quite a bit of hi power rifle shooting across the course in years back.
Alan F., Weight is a concern for the tactical style matches. They run with the rifle and all there gear. The palma type contours are the most popular or a Rem. Varmint contour which to me is nothing more than a palma contour. This helps in keeping the weight of the rifle down. Early on in the tactical matches a straight taper barrel was the most common but not as much now.
Accuracy? My 6 Creedmoor will shoot 1/4 to 1/3 moa no problem if I do my part. I know Jeff has shot his 6.5 Creedmoor with box ammo and said it was a hammer as well. Grouping around 1/2 moa or smaller with the factory 140amax bullets. he hasn't shot any handloads thru it as of yet.
Most of those guys want they're guns just as accurate as anything else. Between they're rifle builds and scopes etc...they're spending $3k to $7k on they're rifles I would say is an average. Just as much as we spend on F-class guns.
